What I'm finding more and more is that it's those with a little experience and a little bit of knowledge that cause the most trouble. Those with no clue at all don't seem to step in, and those with experience tend to look before they leap. Might be a peculiarity of the work I do tho'.

I think the phenomena can be found in all walks of life even down to internet forums.

Aye. Possibly related: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect

"Although the Dunning–Kruger effect was put forward in 1999, Dunning and Kruger have noted similar historical observations from philosophers and scientists, including Confucius ("Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance."),[3] Bertrand Russell ("One of the painful things about our time is that those who feel certainty are stupid, and those with any imagination and understanding are filled with doubt and indecision", see Wikiquote),[13] and Charles Darwin, whom they quoted in their original paper ("ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge").[2]

Geraint Fuller, commenting on the paper, noted that Shakespeare expressed similar sentiment in As You Like It ("The Foole doth thinke he is wise, but the wiseman knowes himselfe to be a Foole." (V.i)).[16]" 2009 110 XS Station Wagon

Why is it that useless Censored ers who can't do a job properly get made into managers, who then get paid more to tell everyone else not to do the job properly? Evil or Very Mad
I feel like going and living in a barrel somewhere. Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Have you ever lost the will to live because of wall cavities
Today I spent an hour on the phone with British Gas trying to get my tariff changed; the mentally challenged guy on the other end of the phone seemed to think I had moved home and transferred me to the moving home dept. Anyway after forty minutes being transferred backwards and forwards I finally got the tariff changed.

I was then asked about home insulation re cavity wall insulation. Apparently from the 1st of April anyone can have this form of insulation fitted free of charge.

I explained that my home having walls made out of stone that are over three foot thick I do not have cavities.

Have you checked for cavities in the walls I was asked?

The property does not have cavities I replied

But have you checked

I am telling you my property does not have cavities

All properties have cavities, I was told

Really, I answered!

Yes was the reply

Well mine does not have them I said

It probably has but you have not noticed, was the reply.

The best thing is to send one of our surveyors to you property who will do an energy survey and check for wall cavities.

The property does not have cavities I said again, it is built of stone, some of which probably weigh half a ton and there are no cavities in the walls anywhere on the cottage.

There probably are but you have not noticed, I was told; our surveyor will drill small holes in your walls and insert a camera to check for cavities.

But there are no cavities, I said rather meekly this time.

You will not know that until our surveyor has checked for them.

By now I had almost lost the will to live and asked is this service free

Totally free I was told

Ok then send your surveyor round, but I am telling you it will be a waste of time because I do not have any cavities in the walls.

I think you will be surprised, I was then informed. all properties have cavities.

So the upshot is a British Gas energy survey has been booked for next month to check for non-existent cavities.

To drill through my walls he will need a mighty powerful drill with a bit at least two foot long should be fun watching him.

In April my boy got his disability benefits back after 11 months, as he got higher awards it meant that his transport, me, could get the 110 taxed as disabled so nil payment. Confirmation papers came on 4th April so into Post Office on the 7th(Monday) and swooped over. The current disc runs out end of June so at least I get two months. May 10 th I get a letter saying that they won't refund as I haven't sold/scrapped/sorn the motor. There isn't any box to put disabled on the form so I wrote on the form they sent that as they had sent the V5 a week earlier then they are aware of the taxation status. I'll end up losing 3months of VLD with their incompetence!

The best government I ever dealt with (don't know if it's still the same) was the Land Registry. I once emailed them and asked them to take over the DVLA. The Land Registry answered the phone(!) and helped you out. For £3 you could find out who owned a piece of land, and they would write to you within two days. This was 10 years ago, and I don't know if they have since been affected with the stupidity-virus. I see the government wants to privatise the Land Registry. Oh dear. Now left.
