Was the filter and the inside of the Provent housing wet with oil? It sounds on the face of it that you have managed to rig up some form of syphon rather than a filter. I am unaware of the setup on a TD5 but on my Puma I effectively in laymans terms cut the crankcase breather and fitted the Provent in series. Where did your crankcase breather return feed to before you brazed it into the turbo return pipe?
***EDIT*** A couple of TD5 owners here have bought them and presumably fitted them too. Drop them a 'pm' and ask how they fitted theirs. http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic26798.html?highlight=provent If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! My Worthing May not be the best,
I simply disconnected the original breather pipe where it fits onto the valve on inlet pipe just after turbo. Connected that to inlet on provent, then put a new pipe from outlet on provent to valve where breather pipe was previously. Effectively just putting the provent inline on original breather pipe. I then connected the small pipe out of the bottom of the provent to the oil return pipe from the turbo. Just can't figure out what's wrong. |

I think the problem is where you have the oil return from the provent, as it allows the vacuum from the engine to draw oil from the turbo return. The drain from any seperator should go to a point below the level of the sump oil. An alternative is just to have it going to a sealed catch tank. Also dont forget that the oil return pipe from the turbo may still actually be under pressure from the oil supply to the turbo.
as an aside I have now fitted a 200tdi seperator to my puma to see if actually catchs anything, I will let everyone know how it goes. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Just blank off the small pipe at the bottom of the Provent there's no need to return feed the oil as they don't need draining very often anyway. I think your issue lies there.

Thanks for the help.
I'll try fitting it without the return in the morning. |

I have done this, I wouldn't want to use this oil again anyway and as Mal says there is very little. I believe the Provent manufacturers suggest a one way valve? Steve |

Due to the close location to the turbo I fitted a steel braided drain pipe to my Provent and my one way valve is an M10 bolt with a small jubillee clip at the end of it. With the mileage I cover it'll be a few years before I'll have to drain it anyway.

Derbywill,
Mine's an XS albeit a 2.4 but it was damn tight for fitting on mine too. Maybe you could utilise my idea of a bracket and 'p' clip arrangement and adapt it for your TD5 perhaps? Have a look at the linked thread there's some photos on there that will give you a guide. There's only two pipes to connect you basically in layman's terms cut the rocker breather pipe and fit the Provent in series blanking off the oil return pipe outlet at the bottom of the Provent. Take a note of the TD5 issue above, no need to connect the oil return. You should have loads of room too which is a bonus.
I know mine's a Puma but you can see clearly the rocker breather connected to the inlet of the Provent. Click image to enlarge The outlet depicted as the lower pipe with the blue 90 degree union is the outlet which is basically the other half of the cut breather pipe.
