As a bit of a field remedy you can put a capfull of brake fluid in the reservoir and top up with atf. Start the motor and with the front wheels clear of the ground on jacks or the like(to reduce the load on the steering), turn the wheels from lock to lock in a steady movement, hold them on full lock for a second or two and keep an eye on reservoir level. If jacking the front is not possible then drive forward and back to reduce the load on the steering. This will help eliminate air locks in the system. The brake fluid helps to swell up the rubber seals and help to slow down leaks.
