Nato hitch..
confused.com!!!

Have searched and read and confused with the various posts....???

I have a 2012 110 defender, currently fitted with a NAS rear step.

Purchasing a sankey trailer (with rotating eye) so I need a nato hitch with a fixed hitch for this.

So far so good?

But, I also use a bike rack/standard trailer onto a standard 50mm ball fitting (nas too hich for standard trailer!), so considering options and removing nas step and refitting standard tow equipment supplied new with vehicle.

I want an easy switch between the two options, and different heights required so looking at fitting a LR Dixon Bate adjustable tow bar?

Presumably I buy 2 slider pieces, one for 50mm and one for Nato? Re the NATO is this a standard fitment or do I need a special slider / modify?

So many options on ebay/websites etc - want to ensure I get the right one, thats properly rated etc?

Any help much appreciated - with links preferably.

That's how I work with mine, Dixon Bate slide attachment on the back and one saddle with a Nato hitch and the other with a pin/ball hitch and just swop over as needed. Most of the time they are in the back so I'm not catching my shins all the time. There are saddles that are drilled ready for Nato hitches and ordinary 2 hole standard hitches all on the same saddle.
I haven't got any pictures to hand but they are quite commonly found(but as usual never when you want one!) on ebay, autojumbles and by asking around.

Dixon Bate Slider is the way to go.

Only thing I can add is if you can afford it, go for the double pin version as it rattles less and in my opinion is better as it spreads your load over 2 pins rather than a single pin, though its all heavy stuff so wont make too much difference.

me too, I have nato hitch, bike rack and std tow ball - easy

remember to remove them when not in use as some thieving b@strd will remove it for you

From what I have read and been told, you cannot tow a sankey via NATO hitch on vehicles built after 1997 (not 1998), as this form of tow hitch is rendered illegal for civilian road use after that year, due to not having the correct type approval.

Edit: If all Defenders are now commercial, I may be entirely wrong on this... 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

N1 or commercial vehicles are exempt from the type approval of towbars as is anything before August 98. M1 vehicles or passenger cars need type approved equipment and it is illegal to modify such equipment. As I understand it all defenders after 2011 are n1 regardless of the number of seats. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.
