Don't forget: rubber smells when new.
I bought a rubber sheet to put in the back I could cut to size myself. I've just recently started using it after leaving it outside for a full year to get the small out. It saw all 4 seasons. I suspect you'll have the same issue with your tyre. |

Hello All
Can I have your views on the options for mounting a non-standard spare wheel at the rear of a Defender Currently I have X4 20x9.5 Land Rover LRX wheels fitted with Cooper Zeon LTZ (275 60R20) Tyres and A conventional steel wheel & tyre spare giving a usable 'get me home or to a garage' option I view the spare as similar to a space saving spare fitted to many cars currently, you really wouldn't want to go that far on it. Also I know that it is 'curtail' to ensure that the diameter of the spare should match or be very close to the other wheels (to within a few mms) so that undue stress is not put on the differential / gear-train. There is also in my case the requirement to take off a wheel spacer in order to use the current spare. So I have managed to source a single ET50 version of this wheel... The wheel is now discontinued at this size (ET53 is still available)... I have been looking at various wheel carriers and whilst I like the Nakatanenga SS carrier at the wrong side of £500 it's too expensive for me (with other projects planned for the 90) The Mantec option looks good, and will also fit 'around' the NAS rear step. I would probably strip it and refinish it inline with the other accessories on my 90 so that they all have a longer life (although the Mantec reviews well in this aspect it would appear). I have been considering another option which I would be interested to hear if anyone on here as actually done, with success. I am considering strengthening the rear door and probably fit a gas strut to control its closure. Door card off, internal and possibly external plating to minimise the 'flex' and ultimate breaking of the rear door is the aim. All of this wont add to the standard strength of the door hinges. Currently I don't know the weight of my alloy + tyre wheel, but I would be surprised if they were significantly heavier than the steel wheel and 'tractor' like tyre fitted. The Nakatanenga rear door strut is a worthwhile modification.....The rear door will not need strengthening with one of these.

Thanks, I have been looking at the Nakatanenga door strut you suggest. It looks as though it requires the door card to be 'modified' (cut down) to allow its 'articulation' That's ok even though I have a re-trimmed interior and adds a bit more work to install well, I think that it is a good mod' to consider. Whilst the door is exposed I will assess if I can get any metal in there that will help, but its good to hear that you think this may not be necessary. Thanks for your help. No door card modification required either on a 2.4 Puma. One of the best modifications you can do in my book. Then again my spare is heavy and BIG!

The strut you have to cut away for is pre 2002 and the post 2002 doesn't need the trim cutting according to 4x4 overlander site (site sponsor on here) pm Brendan and he'll give you all the info you need

Has anyone ever seen a Defender with the spare mounted in front of the grill ?
I think it could look cool and I believe the alloys I have would allow enough air flow to keep the engine cool. Regards the Punctureseal My 90's aftermarket wheels/tyres came as a set of 4, I thought there is no way these would ever pick up a puncture. Then I went wobbly and installed "Puncturesafe" which is when I was convinced my wheels went wobbly. I also have it in the RR and recently had the tyres (c/w Puncturesafe) fitted to some re-powder coated alloys. The alloy refurbishers could not get the wheels balanced, and they and other tyre fitters they consulted, blame the sealant. However, I have it in my motorbike and have never experienced wheel imbalance. On my bucket list is brand new 110 USW. I want to mount a motorcycle carrier to the back, so the spare wheel needs to come off the rear door. If I get a roof rack, it will probably go on there, but I really fancy the front grill idea. The bull bar on the Snatch vehicles has a plate welded into the centre to take the wheel mounting. They do come up on EBay from time to time but the legalities of fitting one to road registered vehicle would be questionable.
