That depends on the time you have.
If you do it yourself it the cost off the chassis but double that as you will find more parts you want to replace. Best rear crossmember is by black sheep off road and i think substantially cheaper than £400 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

I am going to have the same issue later this year as the TD5's rear X member is slowing vanishing ! I think I am going for a new Richards chassis (about £1,700 delivered). I will probbly do the work myself but if not I will get Marsie (on this forum) to do the job - he is next to Richards factory and seems reasonbly priced. I will probably factor in a new bulkhead as well. Do NOT make the mistake I made…
My TD5 got to the 10 year mark: well-used but not thrashed, a good honest beast with never a problem in 190,000 miles other than the to-be-expected couple of half-shafts, clutch cylinders and an injector harness replacement. But, already had a bit of welding around the tow bar fixing, required at least a new cross-member for its next MOT. A new chassis was priced up by my local indie (Roberts Engineering, to be recommended, does everything from maintaining a customer’s Series I - I’m not a rivet counter but even I know that original bucket seats make it special - to racing V8s) as approx. fifteen hundred quid for the chassis, fifteen hundred quid labour, but expect to add quite a bit more for bushes, brakelines, etc., everything it would be false economy not to replace while the body was off. Seemed a lot of dosh, I got a good price for the TD5 and ordered a new 2.4. Absolutely regret it, should’ve re-chassised the TD5 and kept it for another ten years. My advice? Do likewise. Peter |

If in the end you do descide to just replace the crossbeam, I'd look into HD versions, maybe even one to fit a rear winch in if you like to go offroad.
Not saying I have any experience though, just a friendly reminder of all the options out there. |

(1) The 2.4/2.2 is quieter at motorway speeds and has better fuel consumption; it has good heating and the heated front screen is a Godsend.
(2) The TD5 was better to tow with (my PERSONAL opinion, others on here will disagree, but the 6-speed gearbox ratios seem to have been designed for fuel economy rather than towing practicality) and had a better turning circle (not the greatest, but carpark manoeuvring with the 2.4 makes one look a complete idiot). Otherwise, there isn’t too much difference, the TDCi will soon be equally as rattly and juicy as the old vehicle and, let’s face it, to anybody other than an enthusiast they all look the bl….dy same. Ergo, the twenty grand I spent to arrive at (1) would have been more wisely spent on getting the TD5 up to scratch with lots to spare. I was expecting a huge improvement for my twenty grand, I’m hugely disappointed. Hasn’t stopped me lodging five hundred quid with my dealer for one of the last 2015s, though! Peter |

When I changed my chassis a couple of years ago in my neighbours drive this was what it cost
Marsland chassis 1248 Springs, shocks, 1inch spacers, timing belt kit, clutch, brake pipes, door repair kits, a frame bushes, 550 Tree slider 120 Nuts, bolts, washers, anti freeze, cutting discs, pullers and various other odds and sods from tool station and screw fix, probably around 150 Water pump, belt, thermostat 50 Horn 1 Bulkhead delivered 350 Paint 42 Brake hoses, steering damper, Suspension Turret ring, rear pads 88 Mud console switches 80 Work light 10 Fuel sender unit 20 Labour for door and seat box repairs 80 Coming to about £2789, reasonable considering all that I did. Currently having the same problem, my 01 td5 90 front cross member and chassis legs are toasted (well beyond repair) also needs and outrigger and the patches behind centre cross member welding. Anyone with experience of changing a td5 chassis/ bulkhead got any pointers?
Would also agree with birdy, have owned td5's previously, driven hundreds of pumas and currently drive a 2.4 (sales car from work) but the td5 is by far the better of the two in my opinion in so many ways, the sound, the drive ability, the gearbox and the towing are all plus points over the puma |
