Relating to an 06 td5 defender with 80k miles on the clock.
seemingly randomly there is a screeching / chirping noise that almost sounds like a belt slipping but slightly different from the front end. This generally happens at fairly low revs and under load. It doesn't happen when revving the engine out of gear. Ive checked the exhaust manifold and all the studs are present with no signs of gas leaking. Also the belt seems to be pretty well tensioned... ive read elsewhere it may be a tensioner on the way out ir the belt stretched. Anyone else have any ideas if it could be something else? Like i say its an intermittent thing that happens when hot and cold. cheers |

Yeh since it only happens under load its impossible to pinpoint. Really odd as it goes away as the revs climb.

I would suspect a warped manifold. Do a Google search. Very common on TD5, especially if it has been chipped

Yup well all the nuts are still present and tight and there is no sign of exhaust soot staining/escape around the bores. It also only happens briefly and intermittently at low revs.

Interestingly just had another look at the manifold. All the nuts are there and none of the studs have sheared but there is a small amount of soot staining around the port closest to the bulkhead. I sprayed a bit of wd40 around it and i believe there was the tiniest amount of bubbling when the engine is revved.
is it possible it may just be the gasket? Or is it more likely to be the early stages of warping before the studs have actually sheared off? In this case a new manifold pronto before they do shear? |

That's interesting F, I will have a closer inspection of mine tomorrow .
Mine is running in bog standard tune ( except non EGR and decat) There is loads on the forums ref this issue, but I would have thought the warped manifold would have made itself known a bit more obvious than this. Landrovers.... Don't ya just love em!?

Same here, 80k miles in standard tune no mods at all. If this is the reason id be surprised too as i thought it would be more noticeable as it was on my td5 disco.
If you get a chance whip off your turbo heatshield and inspect all the studs, look for soot stains and if pods spray some wd40 / coat soapy water around the manifold to head joins and look for bubbles. Shall keep updated, you too please! Ha. and yeh, theyre great right?  |

To be fair, I can't grumble. I've had it nearly 7 years, done 70k in it and it's been such a reliable vehicle. I keep up to the maintenance, and have been waiting for the manifold to warp. It's a " TD5 thing "  |

Sounds similar tbh, this is a family members whereas i have a td5 d2 at the mo and that's had it happen. This is 80k from new, well looked after and to now been trouble free so...
ha there seem to be a few td5 "things" exhaust manifold, injector harness, fuel pressure regulator... |

Had a similar issue last year. Was very difficult to find the problem but turned out to be the UJ !

I read that thread and went out to check the UJs, also filled them with grease.
Don't think it's the issue though as it seems to be related to the right foot!.... Not totally ruling it out though. |

That's interesting. I haven't checked the UJs so will have a look at them!
although i am now thinking it may well be the manifold as there is definitely a bit of soot around one port... |

Did you check the UJs with the gearbox in neutral and the handbrake off.
I wouldn't have believed the noise was from the UJ until I finally found the fault. 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top |

Just went out and had a quick wiggle of them but hard to tell in the dark. Seemed alright though, will check tomorrow in the light and pack with grease. Although if that is the reason i stil have the mystery soot stain to worry about...
