Puma water temp gauge function
I think my comment about this in a different thread deserves a separate thread subject.

The Puma temp gauge is programmed to stay in the middle once the water temp gets to that level, but it does not move further up until a certain critical water temp is reached, and at that moment without warning the temp gauge will flash all the way to the max, truck will eventually go into limp mode, but sometimes damage can be done by then. I believe the whole thing is programmed like that in the ECU.

In my opinion it would be much better if the temp gauge would work as in most other cars, i.e. show the real water temp as it increases above the normal. This would allow to adjust driving style in a timely fashion, etc....

Has any of the tuners who are real software gurus ever thought of developing a module to reprogram the water temp sensor/gauge in order for it to function the way it should?

I am not interested in any engine tuning, the Puma is fine as it is, but I would buy such a reprogramming modume for the ECU water temp function without hesitation, and believe many others with me, both Puma 2.4 and 2.2 owners.

Easiest solution is to install an EMS like Madman.

This gives me real-time:

. Coolant Temp
. EGT
. Oil Pressure
. Transfer Box Oil Temp
. Voltage

And of course, you can set thresholds for alarms for these parameters. For example, my coolant temp triggers at 105C, EGT at 600C, oil pressure at 1.0 bar, etc. --

An ultra gauge, scan gauge or other OBDII reader will show you this info. together with air intake temp, turbo pressure and lots of together metrics to worry about Thumbs Up

I understand, but the easiest and cleanest solution would be if the standard water temp gauge could be reprogrammed in order to show the real water temp and not mislead us in believing the temp is always perfect.....
As said, presume it is a software reprogramming issue, so I remain a buyer for that.
I am honestly very surprised that such obvious valuable things have not been looked at by the Puma tuning wizzards.
I guess I am not the only one who does not want to add too much after market monitoring screens in the cabin, but would like a clean solution, no? Unless it is an impossible reprogrammation, but that is hard to believe seeing everything BAS, Alive Tuning and others can come up with for ECU changes.

As with most things it would I imagine cost a significant amount to rewrite the software and come up with a solution but with 'other options' available from as little as £8 and less that will do exactly as you wish and more would there be the demand? It doesn't come much 'easier and cleaner' than bluetooth! Also in mitigation do you really need to know the exact temperature if there is nothing wrong it just overcomplicates what is a good basic functionality?

Do not fully agree. I don't care to know if the water temp is exactly 80° or 83°, but if the stupid gauge would move in line with the temp increase, you can see when it is going over normal, to 90°, to 95°, to 100°......
And then you easily do whatever you think is the right thing to do..... That is the logic itself I think.

Now with my driving style I don't think there is much risk of overworking/overheating the engine, and I surely am not interested to buy any of these other monitoring devises, but I would be happy to pay for a normal working temp gauge, yes. Thumbs Up

Eric - agreed- In my last Passat - The thermostat in engine went faulty on me and rendered my electric fans useless. did not notice anything while driving on the freeway, but as I soon as I arrived in traffic, I saw my temp gauge starting to move up. I immediately opened all windows, turned the heating to full, before doing a U-turn and getting some speed to cool her down and then switch her off.

I did not know how the Defender temp gauge worked, but would not be happy to have a similar experience in the Defender if it was going to be to late before taking action?

A temp gauge should work along the full spectrum of the gauge, similar to the petrol gauge, albeit the petrol gauge in the Defender is not linear in the Defender either.

You'd need a shed load of people to make it financially viable perhaps? You could also say the same about oil pressure/temperature, what about a turbo boost gauge readout how many people would like those? The list goes on and on.....
Different people would like different things, all available already in multiple simple and cost effective gizmos that delivers most of what people want. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Oil pressure and temp gauges and turbo boost gauges would be entirely new hardware.
But down to basics, we all have a water temp gauge in the truck, but it does not work optimally, so software tweaking only could solve that in a very simple way without having to install new hardware.
On top of that more or less accurate water temp alone can tell you a lot, it is the most basic indicator and most importantly could prevent big headaches.
This kind of peace of mind would be worth some money to me.

half the reason the gauges don't react quickly is because the temp sensor does not go into the water , the end of the sensor is not immersed in water, the sensor just screws in to a blind hole on the back of the head

Well, between cold and halfway which is supposed to be normal working temp, the gauge does move gradually in line with the rising or decreasing water temp. So no reason it could not do the same for above normal working temps I would say. It just has been programmed differently, which seems to make no sense to me.

Ive not read the full thread so may be slightly confised but the limp mode given from the hot water in the engine comes from the CHT sensor not the coolant temp in the dash.

It reduces torque depending on temprature. Its possibile that the sensor could be rescaled to give limp mode or low torque sooner but I think in some cases it would hinder the driver to much.

An aftermarket sensor kit I think would be the best way to go for an early warning system.

I think that people are just asking if the engine temperature gauge function can remain linear above the normal running point if the engine gets hotter than the normal running point, if you can do it I suspect you will have even more happy customers.

The ECT gauge is driven by high speed CAN bus messages from the ECM. For normal operating temperatures the gauge
needle pointer is positioned centrally in the gauge display. The needle pointer position translates to the following
approximate temperatures.
Engine Coolant Temperature °C (°F) Needle Pointer Position
Ignition off Park position
40 (104) Cold (blue segment)
75 - 115 (167 - 239) Normal (central)
120 (248) Start of hot (red segment)
125 (257) End of hot

Ahh, I dont think the signal from the sensor to the guage movement is calibratable, but I will have a look to see if I can see anything when I get a min.
