Advice please - tbox ratios
Hi All,

Wondered if I could get some advice from you please........

I have a 300tdi tuned and with a BAS VGT turbo. It has a ZF auto box and a 1.2 Tbox. I usually just drive around on A roads and so far it has been fine, but at the weekend I went down to the south coast and on the A34/M3 it was a bit of a 'big dipper' section of road and I was really struggling to maintain any decent speed (60- 70) on the uphills. It is fine on flat roads and cruises along lovely, but I didn't like how it lost all its speed on the hills (even fairly minor uphills).

Should I change to a 1.4 ratio tbox? Looking at the Ashcroft site it says I should be aiming for 2700revs at 70 in top gear. Using the ratio calc I get 2346 revs at 70 now and if I swap to a 1.4 I will get 2707 - so it would seem to indicate that's what I should do.

Any thoughts before I spend about Ł600 on a new tbox from Ashcrofts.

Thanks,

no experience with tdi autos sorry, but 2700 ish rpm sounds more than enough to me for top gear @ 70.

Obviously a manual 2.4 tdci has more power than an auto tdi but my 110 (2.4) copes fine and 70 comes up around 2350rpm, and it'll accelerate up some fairly steep hills in top gear up to the limited top speed of 82.

Only thing is, if you drive at 70/75 on motorways etc, then 2700-3000rpm may get a bit noisy and uneconomical? Don't know a lot as I said but could an overdrive and lower gearing together be a good option? Cheers, David

Ashcrofts advice is spot on. Your truck is over-geared and changing to the 1.4 box will solve this.

Comparing it to a Puma Defender is meaningless, I'm afraid, as the gear ratios and engine characteristics are completely different. Darren

Surely a tdi engine, properly setup with a VGT turbo would have the power to pull that kind of gearing? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I wasn't sure at first if it was lack of power/engine issues that was the problem, but it doesn't seem to be as there is plenty of power and go generally, it is just the problem of maintaining speed on motorways when there is an incline, it seems to struggle.

So I am thinking the 1.4 Tbox is what is needed.

Thanks for the replies.

+ tyres that you run make huge difference - road or ATs very little drag, MTs quiet a bit more, simex or similar extreme drag.

I am running 265/75R16 BFG AT's so shouldn't have too much of an adverse effect.

Ashcrofts do a larger torque converter option but they advise against fitting this unless you have 'a very tuned 300Tdi' or it has negative effects. I don't consider my 300tdi 'very tuned' so I am leaving the TC alone.

I am swapping my 1.2 box in for a 1.4 from Ashcrofts so it's not up for grabs sorry.

Remember the max revs of a Tdi is 3850 so although 2700 sounds quite low, its actually top of the middle range.

Well I placed an order for a 1.4 box from Ashcrofts today due to turn up next Weds so that's my BH weekend project sorted out Whistle

I know some people have said they think it will rev too high at 70, but it is definitely too low revs with the current box. It was fine when I had it mated to a R380 but now its on an auto its needs the extra revs the 1.4 will give.

Once its in and I have driven it a bit I will let you know how it is.

Well I have been driving the Defender around this week with the new 1.4 T box in and I am really pleased. It now seems to be just right. Better acceleration and still does not feel too revvy at 70. It will hold speed without an issue on hills now too.

I changed to a yellow speedo gear and thisnowgives me exactly the samespeedoreading as the sat nav rather than the blue gear that used to read a lot under.

Have to say I received first class service from Ashcrofts again. I can not rate Dave and his team highly enough. I mentioned that while I had the tbox out I was going to strip and clean the governor on the auto box and he threw the gaskets and seals I needed into the order for free.
