My so called clutch problem was diagnosed incorrectly. I found out the noise is still there in First Low at idle on a slight uphill/load up the driveway. I was so p-off that I didn't have the energy to drive it back or even call them. I did call the LR second hand dealer who offered only a fraction of the selling price so there goes that idea. Maybe private sale. While I was testing I also noted a terrible drone from the rear when you take your foot off the gas in second gear at 2500 r/min. Looks like I got a dud - definately going to sell her now. It is more the dealer service that's forcing my hand. If they were able to sort or own up to the problems I would be a tiny bit more willing to hold out but they seem to be hoping to keep you going till 3 years is up. Thought I would have a rant. Never give up - never surrender!
A few years ago when I was having a really trying time with my dealer over some stupidly insignificant warranty repairs they just couldn't seem to get right, I wrote to our national distributor (Land Rover Australia). Well you should have seen the action that resulted from that... They promptly delivered a very nice loan car to me and took the Defender away to sort things out. Even then they didn't get it quite right so when they brought the vehicle back I simply sent them away again. Finally it was all sorted and I even got a couple of very subdued follow-up calls to see how it was all going. Land Rover used to have a "right first time" repairs clause in the warranty guide but I note that the wording is conveniently absent from the 07 model onwards. But it is still worth getting your national Land Rover corporation involved. They don't like the idea of customers being put off their product by poor dealer service. 2007 Defender 110 1970 Alfa Romeo 1750GTV |

I have now got a name and number of Technical guy at LR South Africa and I am going to find out if they are aware of the troubles that you guys in Aus and UK are finding which I assume is known by LR UK/Aus and whether they have replacement boxes and diffs with some sort of fix on the problem areas.
I will update tmrw once I make the call. Cheers James Puma 110 - gone Series III 1973 - going strong |

Spoke to a technical guy today at head office and he said straight that most gearbox issues have been loose clutch plates and springs and only a few complete gearbox failures where the gears stripped.
He tells me the boxes are bulletproof normally. He said he would call my dealership and chat to them about the work they have already done and try and resolve the gearox and diff noises. At least he admitted that there shouldn't be any strange noises and that I should not accept any excuses that "oh - they all make that noise", not that the dealer tried that one yet. Lets wait and see, not holding my breath though. Puma 110 - gone Series III 1973 - going strong |

Mine has been in and out of the dealer for the last few weeks, they still can't sort the issues out. After a long run, if I pull to a stop I get a loud chattering and jolting through the transmission which they put down to handbrake shoes not aligned etc. they have swapped them and the drum and also fitted some clips to the brake pads at the front as they thought this was the issue but it is still there and worse than ever. It was so bad yesterday that it was virtually undriveable in stop-stat traffic as it snatched and rattled and jolted me around
It is really me off to be honest, i can accept faults occur but when they can't fix them and yet tell you specifically they have, it is infuriating. Andy |

Have a look at the shoes, they definately only are supposed to be fitted in one direction and should have a nice leading edge on the lining material in one direction.
This was the problem on my Ser III years ago with the same symptoms. James Puma 110 - gone Series III 1973 - going strong |

I called the head office again and the guy told me they have ordered the modified clutch from the UK.
He is still sure that the clutch is at fault. Lets hope so. Puma 110 - gone Series III 1973 - going strong |

Hi Daniel
Do they say what in the gearbox has given up or are they just fitting a new box? I would love to know. The guys here are either denying gearbox issues or are pretty sure just the clutch is a problem. I am amased that a clutch could have taken 4 weeks. Were they waiting so long for a new clutch plate James Puma 110 - gone Series III 1973 - going strong |
