Mine does this after I fitted an XEng barrel lock that meant the transducer coil had to be moved. Found that when this happened I just exited , locked the defender, unlocked i and then made sure that the fob was close to the lock barrel. Since then only happens one every 3-4 months.

I have this problem about once a year , when it won't start have to jump out ,lock the doors , unlock again , and it starts without issue. Last time was whilst waiting for the ferry at Caen. Caused a bit of a panic ,and look a bit of a plonker but seems to cure it for another few months.

Yep me too .. Happens nearly every time I stop, don't lock and try to restart. I have to lock .. Sit still and wait for the alarm to arm, unlock and then it starts fine. Bit of a pain, but used to it as one if it's charms 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

Have any of you just pressed unlock before starting?
Try that and see if that cures it, the alarm arms it's self after a short while. For example if you unlock it get in get out far about for ten minutes and then just hop in and try to start it'll either not start or start and cut out. If you just press unlock even though it is unlocked it'll disarm the immobiliser straight away. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ |

I've tried it about 3 times, but at the end, I guess the immobiliser was the problem. But why exactly???...don't know yet

Probably a million miles away with this but just to throw another idea in the mix...
If the immobiliser was kicking in as you guys suspect, wouldn't the engine immobilised tell tale light come on ?? (red engine symbol with what looks like a lightening bolt flash through it)... I only ask this as (and mines a Td5 but assume similar logic applies), I had a similar issue to what you describe and it turned out to be one of the relays under the drivers seat had worked itself a little loose and was making intermittent contact. I bent the contacts on the relays and then cable tied them in, in an attempt to achieve a better contact and since then, no issues. Worth a look perhaps, if nothing else for process of elimination..... (I also seem to recall it being suggested once before that a bad earth on the ECU could cause similar problems and folks got around it by running a new earth from ECU casing back the battery..... don't quote me on that though) Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. It can be an earth fault - or a fault in the ECU which happens especially on 2007 and 2008 Defenders - and the fix is a new ECU. Especially as the temp gauge goes high. There is a number on the ECU which will show if in the effected range.
If it does it again, disconnect the vehicle battery, wait appox. 1 minute and reconnect. If this fixes the problem, the fault codes read and see what is stored. It would indeed, I just didn't mention it because it might not be noticed especially to a driver that's new to the Defender quirks perhaps. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ |

My money would be on this one, I had similar situation with the engine cutting out as the temp needle shot up. Re-seated all the under seat relays and never had an issue since. |

This relay stuff could be a good path to the solution, i've been playing around in this electrical box lately, i'll take an eye on it, and if it happens again i'll try the battery disconnection and reconnect after a minute or so... I'll keep you posted if i find something.
Thanks T. |

If you put the key in the ignition and turn it and the immobiliser light stays RED and lit up the vehicle will not start. This happens with a spare set of keys I got programmed by a dealer. But if the LOCK/UNLOCK is carried out with the fob the immobiliser light goes out when the key is turned and the vehicle starts. This points to a glitch in the programming of my spare keys to me. But if your vehicle does not start with the LOCK/UNLOCK on the fob then it points to an immobiliser problem as others have said but how you check/remedy this I do not know. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
