TDCi Reliability and Longevity
Hi there.

I'm looking at buying a 2007 TDCi with 76,000 miles on the clock. It has a perfect main dealer service history with an annual service carried out exactly every 12 months which is 10,000 to 12,000 miles. It starts and runs well and is in good overall condition.

My concern is the mileage as there aren't many Defenders with the Puma engine around (that I can see) with 100,000 plus mileage and I'm looking for something that I can use and keep up to say 120,000 miles - which will be another 5-8 years.

Does anyone have any experience or advice to share? How good is the Puma engine long term and any major issues likely?.

It's a Ford Tranny engine....therein lies your answer. It should go on and on. Noworries 4X4 on here covers phenominal mileage in his and yes he has had issues recently in France but considering the mileage he covers two engine failures he still rates them.

Don't know about up north but here down south there there are a great amount of Pumas with over 200 000km on the clock.

My '07 has 139k miles on the clock. It's just about 'run in' now.

As others have said,it's no less reliable than any other engine really,I will stand corrected,but I believe the earlier Pumas' have or had clutch issues,so may be worth a thorough check when you test drive it. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Anyone know about the following service bulletin - was it mandatory to all 2007 TDcis?

Symptom: 497000 Engine Noise

Content Issue: Heavy audible knocking heard on start up.
Cause: On start up oil pressures can cause the piston cooling jets, (PCJ), to latch into a zero flow condition. Due to hysteresis effect in design the jets do not unlatch until the engine is warm and the oil pressures lower again. During this time with no pressurized oil jet flow to the lower pistons / cylinder bores, overheat and scuff conditions / damage can occur.

Action: Replace the engine assy but ensure only engines post serial # ELD00080707063602 are used.
This condition will not occur on vehicles post assured Vin# 9A767162.
Engines post the info above are fitted with modified PCJ internal springs and this issue is now closed.

No, only affected vehicles. It is not clear at this time what happens if you suffer this now, out of warranty. LR may consider contributing to the cost.

Check engine number or service history to find out if it's been done.

We have the 2.2 in our ducato and the 2.4 in the ldv convoy some die at 60,000 miles dodgy injector smashed piston, others get to 150,000 miles then the cam shaft carrier cracks a well known dura torque engine issue especially when hammered.
Theres always the timming chains but they rattle when cold and give plenty of warning.
We had one get to 456.000 miles in a mini bus it was a 2005 model ldv in the end the bottom end let go.
Shame as the owner needed it for a few more months until he retired !
These engines are all in vans given little respect always hammered, usually with little or no oil them.
I`am presently fighting with a 2011 parts van with a 2.2 unit with 110,000 miles behind it the engines fine but the recurrent maf / egr fault is getting annoying its looking like the ecu may be faulty due to the amount of water and corrosion in the loom and multy plugs

Whenever I see the 'Ford' badge on a product I think "Value engineered - designed to a low cost and then redesigned to save further costs and then the supplier of every component has shaved even further costs out of each part".

Having once bought a Ford car I quickly realised why they would never ever compete with the premium brands. I was however impressed at how one part could fit a myriad of different vehicles in the Ford range.

'Mondeo Man' and 'White Van' man are their core customers and that's where they make their money. Just look at their attempts to move up-market with Volvo, Jaguar and Land Rover - don't think they ever got to grips with the requirements of those customers.

At least if my Defender engine implodes, explodes or just expires gently, there's usually a bloke in a rickety shed down by the canal who can transplant another unit.

A mates 2009 is soon to hit 100k

No problems with the engine apart from 2 EGR valves & a MAF sensor

Just read this and looked at my VIN Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry and mine now knocks when cold stops after 2 miles. 84k on the clock and oil changed every 6k.
I think I will just drive it on and see what happens Its never over in my land rover.
