My 2008 (sold in 2013) racked up well over 100k, many of them off road laning and towing a hefty Ifor Williams horse trailer, it was serviced bang on time, looked after well but other than that had a pretty hard life; in my ownership it never really burnt a drop of oil or had any major mechanical issues other than 3 x EGR valves.
Ive had 3 Puma's & as a work horse that can be thrashed, off-roaded or used as a long distance tourer they can't be beaten. And finally I managed to get 93k out of the original discs & pads (& they still had a few miles left in them)...is that a record?!?! Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains |

Is it a bit like Trigger's broom though? Only had 2 new engines and a chassis and body, but the odometer is original. |

Mine is 2010MY and is at 83k miles now, 30% of those miles have been at full 3.5Te all over Europe, 30% driven hard through winding Welsh. With no engine or transmission issues.
Every ford I have ever owned have gone well past 120k miles without an issue, our Volvo V40 T4 also ran like a dream we kept it for 12years.... the same can not be said for some of our other vehicles from "prestige" manufactures - for example our Audi A3 has had more break downs (all engine) than a 80's pop star in rehab!!! 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper |

No, much of it is original. Working from memory, in that 213,000 miles it has had the following parts as a result of failure or wear (as opposed to upgrades); 4 clutches 1 transfer box 1 front diff 1 set of rear halfshafts and flanges 1 set of wheel bearings (ie one wheel set) 3 VCVs 1 turbo hose 1 radiator Several door hinges 1 dip/main switch 1 main lighting sewitch 2 sets of tyres 3 sets of front brake pads 2 sets of rear brake pads 1 water pump 4 windscreens 1 bonnet catch And possibly one or two other minor things I can't remember. I have also managed to break two ATBs as a result of lubrication issues which has resulted in two new diffs and sets of halfshafts, but I don't count these since they were down to me not keeping a close enough eye on the axle oil. Perhaps of more interest, except for the items listed above, all of the engine ancilliaries are original, the gearbox is original, the out[put adaptor shaft splined coupling is original, the front swivels have not needed replacing, the propshaft UJs are original, all of the steering balljoints are original, the srpings are original, all the suspension bushes are original, and the battery is original. Overall I am happy with the performance to date, although it must be noted that my TD5 Disco 2 (which has done very nearly the same mileage) has needed far fewer bits replaced. wow! Looks a long list, but actually as you say all wear/tear over the 213k. Impressive list of originals too!
Interesting how the TD5 has had less repaired though. Our Landy garage man always says the TD5 is the engine he would prefer in a Defender. No reason to sell our Puma though |

By way of comparison and working from memory again, the equivalent list for the TD5 Disco 2, which has done around 200k miles, is as follows:-
1 clutch 1 battery 1 track rod end balljoint 3 set of tyres Can't remember how many sets of brake pads, probably 3 front, 2 rear 1 FPR 1 set of fuel pipes, tank to filter 1 ACE pipe (pump to valve block) 1 pair of front springs 1 front propshaft (who was the moron who thought ujs, and the centre bearing in the DC joint, don't need grease nipples!) 2 alternators (who was the moron who put and oil-fed vac pump on the front of an alternator!) 2 window lifters It is also in need of a transfer box (since the original presently sounds like an underground train accelerating), and the headlining is starting to sag. Original are all engine parts except as noted above, the gearbox, the transfer box (at present), the axles, all suspension components apart from the springs above, the rear propshaft (including the rubber doughnut!) I totaly agree, my Defenders have averaged 25,000 miles a year, the Range Rover and series vehicles around 10,000. Keeping all that oil and coolant circulating gives bearings, seals and so on no time to "dry out" i.e. they stay lubricated. Of course they have needed proper servicing and replacement parts but I'm convinced that they have cost me much less per mile' in parts and servicing than any pampered weekend warrior. Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right. |

Same with any car, having them sitting around for long periods can do them more harm than using them every day.
Regarding this original post (which is quite old), The engine and gearbox are straight from a Transit and it's not unusual to find transits with a quarter of a million miles on them. The rest of the car is basically the same as any other Defender and will last as well. |

It's a defender. It's a truck of which the transfer box needs rebuild around 300k miles and the drive flange may not last 10k kms
You should know what you buying A new engine is part of the service schedule for a dedender |
