low range first gear

Was in low range first gear in the Puma yesterday. Got passed out by two snails. Boy those boys with the shells sure can move.

2009 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Santorini Black

Was using it to its full effect yesterday down a very rutted farm track, no matter what obsticle it came accross the revs stayed still and it just clambered over everything. Was quiite relaxing really...

Untill I stopped at the main road for a bit, forgot it was in low box and tried to set off onto a main road in low first... Duh.

One thing that got me thinking though, what would happen IF you had it in low first, put the handbrake on and lifted the clutch? Would it start ripping the ground up or rip the transmission to bits?

Depends on whether you'd locked the centre diff. If you hadn't, it'd just drag the back wheels (the handbrake is on the rear propshaft. Lock that up and it'll put all the power to the front wheels.

If you had locked it. you'd probably just destroy the handbrake.

Antistall is only doing a fairly determined version of what you might try setting off. I can drive through the handbrake in high ratio if I put my mind to it so low wouldn't be too much issue for it

Was one of them things that was running through my head, but would have probably been expensive to put right if I ever daft enough to actually try...

Embarrassingly I got to try that at a short LRE thing a while back. I'm not used to using the handbrake in my Caterham (as in the old ones it's in an awkward place), and just park in gear. I had been doing a few minutes of the practise course, marvelling at how well it copes just with the anti-stall, when the instructor points out I've got the handbrake on
