My 2004 TD5 90 HT
Following on from my recent topic in General, here's my 2004 90 hardtop.

115,000 miles, 3 previous owners! Belize green.

As standard as standard gets at the moment, it has been previously fitted with a winch as wiring is present but other than that original.

Pictures from the original advert, they make her appear slightly better than she is.

There's plenty to do, my list gets longer day by day as I sure most of yours do! Laughing

Current plans include :-

Thatchem alarm and immobiliser
Renew windscreen seal
Heated windscreen
Heated seats
Electric windows
New tyres
Spare wheel carrier
Sound proofing
Carpeting.

I'm looking into headlinings at the moment and also considering rear seats and side windows, also looking at getting a double din stereo installed.

Hi Chris,

I'm cross-posting here but my suggestion first of all would be soundproofing.

A raw hardtop is a tiring, noisy beast.

I used a mixture of Dynamat and Noisekiller stuff. The Noisekiller eggcrate roof foam and wall linings were effective, and I lined the loadspace with ply laid on thin ebay foam.

Dynamat best on the bulkhead and under the matting.

Let us know how you get on. 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop
Now a 2013 110 USW too.

Soundproofing is on the list Thumbs Up

I think I may place an order in the near future for some Dynamat from Alive, I'll have a look into the noisekiller stuff, thanks for the pointer!

I've owned the defender for just under two weeks now and have used it on and off for various journeys, overall I'm really pleased with it. I'm not really sure what I expected having only driven a Puma once a few years back but there's certainly scope for major improvements to suit my needs.

There are a few niggles ive picked up on whilst getting to know her, first of all reverse gear is difficult to change out of, fine going in but a stiff when going to select another gear, I'll change the gearbox oil and see if it helps.

Secondly, I purchased the Defender as "serviced", clearly it hasn't been so I'm a little miffed, coolant level very low and oil level below minimum on the dipstick, my own fault for not checking when I picked it up, a service kit is on order from forum sponsor Advance Factor and should be with me tomorrow.

Thirdly, with the heavy rain we had here last week there are two puddles in the footwells, all part of defender ownership I know, but needs sorting out before sound proofing.

I've ordered a few bits, some Td5 badges for the wings, a new Defender badge for the rear, a service kit as mentioned above. I'm considering Dynamat at the moment from Alive, I'm not sure whether to do the whole truck in it or just the bulkhead and seat box and get some cheaper stuff for the rear and roof, opinions please?

I'm also ordering a Toad alarm tomorrow so that should be here to for me to fit at the weekend Thumbs Up

Before you go changing the oil (a worthwhile exercise anyway if you've no idea how long its been in there) try pulling the gearlever towards you & it should pop into neutral no bother, if you are just pushing forward it won't go as easily.

NIce looking 90 you have got there. Mark S

A few jobs done on the defender over the weekend.

I purchased a service kit from forum sponsors Advance Factors, excellent service Thumbs Up and got to work sorting that out, everything was fairly straight forward apart from removing the oil filter which was a major PITA! The fuel filter looked like it had never been changed and judging by the amount of dirt that came out of it it probably hadn't.

Whilst servicing I discovered the rocker cover gasket was leaking quite badly so a pm and a call to Dan at Duckworths and a new gasket was on its way along with an injector loom, all changed and I'm happy to report no more leaks! I changed the injector harness although looking at the original it all seemed ok so I'll hang on to that as a spare.

Whilst ordering with Dan I got some new springs sent out as she was fitted with HD springs from the factory, I've ordered SW springs for hopefully a much smoother ride, I need to order some new dampers and a steering damper as mine have seen better days, I'm thinking of Bilstein B6, any thoughts?

Another job has been to sound deaden the front and rear floor, being a hard top it's pretty loud inside, as she's being built to take away on some European trips and general holidaying around the UK it makes sense,I decided on ordering some Dynamat from Gary at Alive, a great price and I've been really surprised how far just two packs have gone!

Pictures below

I started by stripping out the seats, mats and giving it a damn good clean and then started dynamating the seat boxes and front floor

I discovered I'm missing the battery box cover so ill do that once I source one, I haven't done inside the battery box or the under the drivers seat, is it needed? I figured not as the top will be covered but I'd be interested to hear others thoughts.

Next job in the front is to remove the dash in preparation for Dynamat on the bulkhead as well as installing my new alarm.

I moved on to the rear then, it was fitted with a plywood boards covering the floor, I was pretty surprised to find no less than 9 full dustpans full of c**p ranging from screwdrivers to a kitchen knife! Clearly had never been swept out in its life.

I scrubbed it all out with some soapy water and let it dry off, looked much better after this.

And then started laying the Dynamat, I've matted up to the rear side panels as I'm going to fit side windows in the near future so I didn't see any point in matting these.

All matted and ready for carpet. I'll remove the rear wheel carrier from the bulkhead as seen in the above picture and also some brackets from behind the seats which held the jack and carpet over the bulkhead then re fit the jack brackets, that should tidy it up nicely.

I have the carpet already as I ordered it from eBay. I order four sheets of this :-

I have way to much, I was originally going to order a front carpet set from Exmoor trim but may well give it a go myself with what I have.

So jobs for this weekend are to fit the rear carpet, start removing the dash to fit the alarm, I've also got a central locking kit so I'll get round to that to whilst doing the alarm. I have a clutch spring kit to fit to make the clutch nice and easy and a few bulbs for the instrument cluster.

I'm enjoying Defender ownership so far
