Lots are advertised as "Genuine 200tdi!!" but have actually been fitted with a discovery engine. They are very different to look at so should be obvious, also if the seller doesn't want to open the bonnet walk away as could mean there are other nasties to be observed.
Rust is a general problem, they are getting on for 22 years old now so most have been patched or desperately need it, Check Bulkhead, Doors, A and B posts, Rear Cross member. As Salisbury axles are bullet proof but can suffer from leaks, a nose leak can be a expensive and difficult problem to solve but isn't the end of the world. There are very few in original condition and most will have had some kind of mod in the past by now, so try and get one which is as original as possible as it will give you the best starting point and less likely to inherit someone else's muck ups. |

^^Completely agree with the above. I'm not a huge fan of the 200, (hence why I've got a 300), but watch out for nasty Disco transplants, and most importantly rust! An engine to TDi for!

red booster servo looks good but i wouldnt be shelling out nearly £400 for a nice light clutch! it only takes a day or so to get used to the normal one in my opinion ! i suppose if swmbo wanted to drive it it would be worthwile.
im guessing though you will find plenty of other things to spend on it first! My 109 thread my youtube channel |

Can you do the Td5 "clutch pedal mod" to a 200 Tdi ? My old 300 Tdi certainly had it. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Purely for interest, how heavy is the clutch on a 200 Tdi?
Is it somewhere between a more modern Defender and a Series vehicle, or tougher again than what I am now used to on my S2A? 1970 Series 2A 88" |

200 is a great engine they are pretty bulletproof. 300 had the timing belt issues. Biggest problem with 200tdi is the gearbox.
I've been rebuilding one for a few years and they are so easy and forgiving to work on. I haven't got a clue about engines and with some help to finish it. It runs really well. The problem with the one I am rebuilding everything was rotten. To get it going it's be put back together with mainly td5 parts. There are a few good ones out there. |

Its a lot lighter than a series vehicle and if you are used to a series you won't have a problem, i don't understand why peeps say a defender clutch is heavyer they obviously havn't driven a series before Graham 1988 Defender 90 county 200tdi ( Beast ) Paul Walker 1973-2013 ( I Almost Had You ) |

I once owned a 2.5Td 90 (which uses same clutch and gearbox) and the clutch was VERY heavy and this resulted in the clutch arm being punched through on its pivot point which is not uncommon. When the clutch was eventually replaced it was so much lighter it was like a different car. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I have a 200TDI which I run every day in a mix of fast A roads, B Roads, Town Traffic and Manoeuvring and don't think the clutch is too heavy.
Mine has a HD Clutch Kit and the army spec pedal so is quite heavy, but once you have done a few shunts and stop starts around town your leg builds muscle and it stops being a problem. Plus your girlfriend knows where you are because you walk in circles, between Work, Pub, and Home. For £400 I'd put it towards getting a better starting point. |

That's why in the end I settled for a 200tdi as whilst I was saving for a 300tdi they was about £3,000-£4,000 then when I had the money saved they immediately went to £5,000 + which I just could not afford so on another forum I got offered this one a 2.5td converted to a defender 200tdi for £2,700 with minimal work needed Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Graham 1988 Defender 90 county 200tdi ( Beast ) Paul Walker 1973-2013 ( I Almost Had You ) |

It's surprising just how much lighter they have the pedal on a tdci. The 200 takes some getting used to but they are great to drive. One of the lads had a 200 tweaked it went quite well.
