Trying to establish if the egr is leaking so want to blank it to see what happens?
Thanks for all the help. Would you say the m8's are easier or more difficult? |

Ah, well yes, I believe the chaps at work who used to work for hunters in Guildford said, you can remove the EGR on a TD5 but not the Puma as this unsettles the ECU. Don't quote me on that, but i will ask again tomorrow.

some ecu's will give fault code for maf with egr blocked off , not sure what puma would give
maf sensor is before egr so air readings go up out of set limits and give fault code and light on |

I recently had my EGR disabled whilst getting a remap of the ECU. It was getting noisy whilst driving so was facing a replacement Anyway. It's worth it not to have to listen to the self clean process every time you shut the engine off. Mind you, with the noticeable improvement in drivability, I am as biased as hell.
Pete from BAS is worth getting in touch with regarding EGR issues (not to mention remapping solutions). Good luck. Sometimes It is better to ask for forgiveness, than to ask for permission. |

just trying to give myself as much of a head start as possible tonight.
the m8 (10mm spanner) screw into the egr ie the egr is threaded not the pipe. is the same for the m6 (ouput side) or do they screw into the output pipe ie is the pipe threaded and not the egr? as such to remove the m6 bolts socket needs to be between the egr and bulkhead / wing ? |

not sure of the correct terminology but thinking either a torq head or allen key head bolt would be a good replacement for the m8 bolts.
reason I say this is the jubilee / sprint clip on the rubber hose near the rear of the egr seems to be preventing me from getting the socket onto the bolt. I don't think this would be a problem then (certainly this appears to me like a good solution for the upper most bolt - open spanner from below seems fairly straight forward for the bottom one) - any thoughts / reason why I shouldn't? |

Hi, new to this forum and signed up because of this very useful egr post. Thanks!
Planning to replace the EGR on my 2007 Defender @80500 km within the next few weeks. Via my Lynx device I've been reading the fault codes, have one p-04004 EGR actuator stuck open. For replacing the EGR I wonder how you can get the right torque values as access is so difficult? Do not expect to get a torque wrench in? Or am I wrong? Cheers Marco |

I managed it, the torque settings are a must. The bolts have been known to shear so don't risk it.
Access is very tight but possible with patience, if you really are stuck with your tools try getting some adapters etc. Removal is harder than the fit of the new EGR, for removal of course you can use any tool. Just go easy though. Couple of my photos might be helpful for reference : ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge |

Just realised I posted those photos on the previous page.
![]() An added note is disconnect the battery then the EGR electrical plug before working on it and when the new one is in connect the plug and then the battery. The plug can be a fiddle, don't force it there is a special way of un-locking it but I cannot remember how now. I think there is a locking tab you have to gently prise slightly away and then it's off. Perhaps someone else can confirm? |

Thanks for the answers & instructions! I've ordered a small torque wrench now, hopefully I can get it in. Expect to start this job within two weeks, awaiting the new EGR and gaskets.

![]() If I remember correctly most bolts are accessable from the top. One is a sod at the bottom, and I accessed from underneath. If you've got longish arms reach then you'll have no trouble but otherwise it will be difficult. Should be fine though, many have done it. Received the new EGR today, looks like the new one has additional connections for cooling?? Can not remember where but think I did read something about the upgrade design somewhere.... Any idea what to do, just ignore?
