I know it's an old thread but just got oil from local motor factors for engine oil change.
It's maxol synthetic 5w30 C3 The C3 bit is what has me puzzled, done a bit of googling and it says this is for BMW, mercedes, opel and vauxhaul engines with DPF and cat. I know my td5 has neither but will it be OK, ie is it just overspecced ? |

My TD5 have 15W40 (john Deere, Delo 400, Cat, Delvac, Petrobras, whatever is in offer) every 5.000 km changing filter every 15.000 km... now 230.000 km not engine problems. Off course my cold days are 25°C.... I only check ACEA specs are B3, E7 or E9....
ALso have used some synth, best of all MObil 1 0W40 C3 is not suitable for TD5 using long intervales, TBN is too low |

As this topic is about oil and Td5, has anyone else experienced overfilling the engine when changing oil and filter?
According to the Genuine Workshop Manual the engine contents 7,2 litre + 1,0 litre when filter is changed. I used Mahle filter this time and compared this filter With the genuine one that I replaced and they where identic (exterior meassured) The result of my service was that after refilling the engine With 8,0 litre the dipstick showed almost 2mm above the max mark after start up and when the engine where Cold. For info-the rotorfilter was also changed. Is the workshop manual correct or what?? I don`t have the handbook (owners manual) so I can`t compare With anything else but I cant understand either that the filter can take 1,0litre as it is alot smaller than the tdi/v8 filters. Thanks for answears and keep on Rovering folks -99 Td5 90 CSW -09 Jaguar xk4,2 Portfolio |

Mine only uses 7.5 liters including filter..... Thing is there is always oil inside the engine you can't drain....

Do you think highly tuned TD5's require a certain oil? Just curious if anyone does anything differently with theirs and what their service intervals are? "Big green" 2000 Td5 90 IRB Developments modified (2004-2011)

Don't think you can drive a Defender hard enough to warrant different (thicker) oil and if you tried your engine wouldn't last long, stick with what LR say and if you drive it hard change it more often. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Don't let yourself pay too much for filters, when the TD5 small black filter has Mahle and Land Rover stamped on.... no point paying Land Rover more for the same thing. Just an example
We use 5W30 fully synthetic Refill with 6.5 after a drain, level check then top up to where needed. You never get it all out when you drain. |

Have used some 5w30 C3 oil for topping up my Td5 as had some left over from an oil change on my sons BMW I saw earlier in this thread that it's not suitable for Td5 is that so? If so why? Was thinking of using this for my next oil change which is due shortly.
Any help appreciated 2005 Td5 90 XS Steve |
