Yes and the other 4 competing Defenders on the Mid Wales Stages. Ed Cobley, who won the class, was really going well. Sadly one of the defenders got lost on the road liaison between stages 3 and 4 and nearly ran out of time.

It was a good start to the series. Next round is at the Somerset Stages in Minehead on 12th April but sadly it clashes with the opening round of the British Cross Country Championship at Pikes Peak.

Regards

Was Ed the 1st one through Sweet Lamb stage?
He looked very quick.

Yes he was leading all day. I was the radio marshal at junction 26 on Sweet Lamb /Hafren and Ed arrived at our hairpin sideways first presenting his N/S before showing us his O/S. It was the most dramatic cornering style of the day!

Hey we had a great time, a massive learning curve for us, I've been rallying since 2002 but this was my first time navigating and Damien's first time driving. The first time we had been in the car together was on the way out to the first stage so we have a while to go before we are on Eds pace.

Seems a bit of a damp squib as a competition - only 5 competing and the winner 12 mins out in front!

A damp squib it may seem to the armchair enthusiast however its worth bearing in mind:

There were only 5 vehicles out on the first round, they aim to have about 15 of us out over the next few events so we've been told.

Of the 5 vehicles out, 2 of the drivers had experience in rallying/rally raids in Land Rovers, the other 3 it was there very first time driving competitively on a rally stage in a £50k piece of kit that they've worked hard for. With navigators that were first timers on their first event as well that makes a big difference.

Times will improve for us at the back. Motorsport is all about seat time and you are not going to be Colin Mcrae on your first event & definitely not in a Defender. I'm personally happy for my driver Damien, for finishing his first event, with the vehicle in tact. That was our aim for the event, to get the finish and get the seat time. The rest will come with experience but in the meantime we're having fun.

I have to agree with Motorpromotor, wasn't the aim of this challenge to develop novice drivers?
I'm sure they will all improve over the year and good luck to all taking part.
I'm sure a lot of us would love to have a go Thumbs Up

Travelled plenty and stood in freezing cold and driving rain watching many a comp safari - so I think I'm qualified enough to comment. Rolling Eyes

I wish you guys competing all the best of luck and certainly hope the grids expand but wonder why people are jumping in at this level if they have not done any lower events in lesser vehicles before?
