^^Yep, they are indeed illegal. Although I've never heard of an MOT failure because of them! An engine to TDi for!

illegal ? As I understand, HIDs need SELF leveling and a Washing system to make them legal
By the time that's all fitted, LEDs are cheaper |

Well... I was branding them as "illegal" if fitted without modification to a Defender... Which most people would do, as the mods needed wouldn't be economical to do! But they are legal if fitted along with the correct modifications! An engine to TDi for!

as long as direction, height ect and frequency are all within limits, law only states white light at front of vehicle but halogen are closer to yellow spectrum than white. and yellow is for fog or day running as long as incandescent lamp does not exceed 21W
Theres no failure for MOT, its a grey area that nobody wants to fight against to due cost in doing so, only MOT fail on this is when people go more blue than white as dip/high beam lights The problem and grey area is with dazzling other road users and blue light, because yellow does not dazzle other road users so its better (Uhmmmm) red does not effect your night vision that's why red is at rear Please correct me if im wrong as this was my field until 8 year ago so I aint brushed up on it but haven't heard anything to contradict what im saying So no body can complain about 5000k Hid or can they.... |

LED is a more recent development than HID. High quality LED headlamps like the Speaker, Nolden, and I presume also the Truck Lites will supposedly last a vehicle lifetime. Approved HID lamps (not speaking about those so called HID bulbs in Halogen approved headlamps which remains de facto illegal) last longer than a halogen bulb, but if you keep your vehicle for quite a few years, high probability that you will have to replace a HID lamp in the unit anyway, and that is not cheap at all. My personal experience is comparing our VW's factory equipped HID light output with the Speakers on my SVX, and the LED have higher light output than the HID. And most importantly, at night when it rains, wet roads, etc. the LEDs seem to lighten the road much much better than the HIDs. So answer is I would opt for any of the good quality recent LED headlamps, in the long run it is the best investment on all fronts.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

Thank you eric
A positive reply with good insight, I agree with what you say and I think you have convinced me to purchase L.E.D. headlights, now the battle starts on which ones to go for as the market is getting flooded with them |

Started on std lights.moved onto new lens new bulbs relay rewire and bigger bulbs
Then went to hid. 55 watt and then 35w Used 4300 kelvins which are same spec as oe hid,s And yes there not legal without wash and auto level and yes many mot station around here will fail them unless your a taxi or boy racer Gave up swapping buts on the hids due to failures ,flickering lights, aversion to water and vibration. Still got the last two sets which seem to work reliably ...offers? Gone back to updated std lights But will be going to led lights soon After using a landy with a set which are mot ok and e marked etc.good beam pattern and not to dazzling to other road users |
