Questions on gearbox to transfer box adaptor lubrication?
Hi everyone.

The have been a number of threads on this adaptor with reference to failing/lack of lubrication.

The owners manual lists the recommended lubricant.

However, I have a couple of questions:-

1. In this something that can only be lubricated on assembly? Or is there a fill point/grease nipple?

2. If there is a user service point - how often should this be done? Is it part of the service schedule?

3. If not has anyone considered tapping a hole for a grease nipple? Got photos of the article in question - in pieces?

Regards

Mark.

My Defender (Td4 my2009), about three months ago was recovered in a workshop to install the ATB diff in the LT230 transfer box. I ask to check for wear or corrosion the output-shaft and made a mod to allow proper lubrication.

I was extremely surprised because the guy who did the job found a kind of rubber "sock" filled of grease placed around the output-shaft.

This mod was probably made by the dealer a couple of year ago when he did clutch replacement.

I know that Ashcroft is working to develop a lubrication kit for the output-shaft.

So currently there is no lubrication for this shaft right? Mine was destroyed at 25k miles and splines sheared off and replaced.

Correct. It can only be lubricated prior to the gearbox and transfer box being bolted together. It runs in a large empty dry space and is inaccessible without dropping the t-box out.

On the basis of the relatively poor stats available, 2010 MY vehicles seem to be the ones most likely to suffer failures of this shaft.

How do you find the ATB in the t-box? Can you give us an assessment/review please? I'm thinking of doing the same myself.

My 2010 110 suffered from horrible backlash and the stealer here in Perth WA had it in to fix under warranty. I chatted with the service foreman who reckoned that there was no requirement for this shaft to be lubricated although I'd definitely seen a Castrol grease recommended somewhere, maybe in the manual or on the net.
A few months later it turned out the transfer box was whining and they decided to change it and given the mileage (kilometerage) mine had done it should have had a recon box but none were available. I pleaded with this service foreman to please please please grease this during re-assembly and he assured me afterwards that it had been done.
Impossible to check so I'll have to wait and see.
AlanH.

PS. I visited a so called LR expert here in Perth not long ago who told me that ALL Transits were suffering from gearbox failure and it was all the fault of this shaft even though they haven't got a transfer box....... Surprised
