I also have this installed, and for the price it is very good, though it does have limitations as highlighted by K9F.

I use a GiffGaff pay monthly SIM - £5 for 300 texts or £7.50 for unlimited texts.

Did you have to alter and settings on the sim?

Hmmm, read somewhere that a 3G sim won't work in it

In SMS mode this device doesn't care what the network data type is - however this tracker has the option to enable real time tracking which you could do via a web based platform, and this is done via GPRS. This of course could be a limitation dependent on the network.

For the small outlay it would be worth considering a battery backup for this system surely? Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I have one as well. It doesn't work with a 3 Sim as 3 do not have a gsm or gprs network, but 3g only.
I found it to be a bit flakey. Not100% reliable, but better than nothing. I think I will probably bite the bullet and upgrade to something like skytag
, but keep this one so that I can track the vehicle whereabouts myself.

That explains it then thanks. Mine is not for the Defender, it's for another piece of equipment.

I use GiffGaff and if your sending between two GiffGaff numbers, then its free if you top up once every 3 months. I use GiffGaff on my main phone (£12/month unlimited text/data and 250 mins talk). If anyone wants a SIM, let me know via PM and I'll send you one - there is a referral process (that's how they market themselves) so its a great way to make money for phone credits too.

So even better value. As it runs on the O2 network, you get the same coverage.

Possibly not as good as a Skytag system, but for the cost and flexibility its a good start.

cheers
