non start and other issues
Today the Puma refused to start. Key in, turn key, lights on,radio on but no start. Not even a cranking noise. Started alright about 15 minutes later. I had just returned from a journey about 10 minutes before the non start. This has happened before but only a couple of times. Seems to be no rhyme or reason for it. Is there a fix for this problem yet? Funnily enough I was on to the dealer today about a service for next week so I told him about the non start. Dealer thinks it is either fuel or electrical. I told him neither. My breather vents at the bulk head so no dirt or water issues there. I think it is the programming in the ECU, i.e. the instructions for the immobiliser. He said he will plug it in but as far as I know these non starts are not logging faults. Anyway will post results when I get the service done. It will be £330 for the second service.
So the non start is on the list of things to be checked out. Others include a leak from the steering box(very slight so far), rusting steps and headlight surrounds. Front bumper rusting underneath.
Had bother with the central locking on the second door drivers side last week. Same problem as before. The wire used is very thin. It breaks where it is kinked when the door is closed. This time added thicker and slightly longer wire. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Non-starting was an issue on some 1.8 Freelanders. Was a resultof a bad earth upsetting the immobiliser. Symptoms identical to yours.

Hope this helps,
Harvey

Had a quick check. Managed to get a few turns on the battery positive terminal with the ratchet. The earth strap to the cross member in front of the driver took a turn or two as well but nowhere near as much as the terminal. Hope that does the trick or is there something else I can get the ratchet at? Very Happy 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

also what you could try like i did with mine. reshape the lead terminals (slightly) and undo clamps fully then put them on the tighten fully. that sorted my problem out.

I had a similar non-start issue. The engine would crank only slowly and on the second attempt would fire up normally. Later the same day it refused to crank at all, although the lights worked. The dealer changed the starter motor and all is well.

Thank you all. I have tighened the battery terminals and both ends of the earth strap. The non start has only occured no more than five times in two years so it is very erratic. I will see what the dealer comes up with next week at the second service. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

dealer couldn't find anything wrong with my car..it went there on a flat bed and the Censored thing fired up and they drove it off Mad YOU KNOW REHAB IS FOR QUITTERS!!!!

Personally I think it is the immobiliser not being "demobilised" when the engine is switched on. The message is not getting through to tell it to allow the vehicle to start. I think it is the software dealing with this that is at fault. But why it only happens occasionally is a mystery. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

It seems the Puma wiring or its ECU is very sensitive to poor earths. Mine gave a lot of trouble with not starting where the temperature gauge went off the top of the scale, the engine would turn over but not start. I could reset the ECU by pulling and replacing the 30amp fuse for the ECU under the RH seat but this was not a satisfactory solution.

The dealer had it (by flatbed) a number of times but struggled to sort the problem until I said I'd either need an offer I couldn't refuse or I'd change it for something else. Anyway they got LR technical involved and on their advice remade all the all the joints of the pins to wiring loom in the ECU plug and removed, cleaned, refitted and resealed all the earth straps and no trouble since. Hurrah!
