Thanks, Pete. That's a shame, I was hoping it would work on mine as it's close by and a fair price. He's adamant that it will fit, but will stay clear if it's not advisable

It will fit but its not really the best way to go, most only reprogram the mapping chip (29F200BT) via OBD to suite the defender calibration but their is also an 8 pin SOIC Eprom (93C66) in their that also should be converted at the same time to NNN500020 to match the calibration, this is a solder job and most dont get done.

Hi again all - unfortunately the problem persists! My local indy has been very helpful as usual, but have changed a number of things and it's still going on.
Things changed so far:
-ECU
-Glow plugs (3 weren't working)
-MAF
-Air temperature sensor
-Injector seals + harness
-Fuel filter

All to no avail. Any ideas gratefully received!

What fault codes are stored mac, I take it a genuine maf sensor was used? Have the live readings been checked, cylinder balance etc?

As far as I'm aware there aren't any fault codes showing (it's still in at the indy). It will be a genuine MAF too, and I think all of the live readings have been checked. Next step looks to be looking for chafing in engine harness.

Did the fuel purge this morning after being left over night, still the same problem but ran normally much earlier than usual. So hopefully a search for air getting into the fuel may sort it

Back again! Everything feels pretty tight fuel delivery wise, can't figure out anywhere where air could be getting in. Found a couple of chafed wires under the drivers seat, wrapped these in insulation tape.

A couple of new discoveries : when it's running rough/very slow after starting up the speedo rushed up to 50mph then back down again, and also on about half revs there feels like a slight misfire and some blue smoke comes out the back until i rev it right up high then misfire/smoke clears. Totally stumped again!

As an aside does anyone know a good diesel/TD5 guru in Kent?

If its any help I found this on youtube and this is EXACTLY what my engine does when started from cold. The diesely smoke doesn't stop until it lets me rev it like at the end of the vid

Remove the serpentine belt and then start the engine from cold.

Seriously, try it! It'll go straight to idle.

Then get some timing pins and reset your timing properly.
