My understanding is;

Red: The DPF is overfull and regeneration cannot start in any driving conditions. I suspect the ECU will enter limp home mode.

Orange - Illuminates when the DPF is approaching capacity
Red - Illuminates when the DPF is full

(Defender MY12 Quick Start Guide)

Orange - Illuminates when the DPF is approaching capacity. If this warning lamp illuminates, carry out
the DPF regeneration procedure as soon as possible.

When the amber warning lamp illuminates (see 29, DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF) (AMBER)), the filter requires a regeneration cycle to clean itself. This requires the engine to have reached normal operating temperature. Regeneration takes place automatically at an interval of approximately 300-900 km (190-560 miles) depending on driving conditions. Regeneration normally takes 10-20 minutes and is automatically requested by the engine control module if the vehicle is driven steadily, in high range, at vehicle speeds between 40mph to 70mph. It is possible that the regeneration process will occur at lower vehicle speeds, but the events may take a little longer at a 50 km/h (30mph)average speed.

If the vehicle is frequently driven short distances or in cold weather conditions then the engine may not reach normal operating temperature. This means that regeneration of the diesel particle filter does not take place and the filter is not efficiently cleaned. When the filter reaches a condition when a filter regeneration is appropriate and the current drive style is not appropriate, an amber warning lamp illuminates on the instrument
panel (see 29, DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF) (AMBER)). This is not indicating a fault condition with the vehicle and no dealership support should be required. Start regeneration of the filter by driving the vehicle, in high range, preferably on a main road or motorway. The vehicle should then be driven for approximately
20 minutes or more. When regeneration is complete the warning lamp will extinguish.

Red - Illuminates when the DPF is full. If this warning lamp illuminates, the vehicle should be taken to your
Dealer/Authorised repairer as soon as possible,

WoW!

So if you own one of these on a Game Ranch in Botswana or Kenya or Namibia, where there are no roads for miles what then?

What if you have these on Curtis Island, Queensland, Australia, deployed as a recovery vehicle where there are no roads, only 800 metres of rocky beach and a massive big gaping hole in the ground where gas extraction occurs?

Or if you are using these in one of the many mine shafts hundreds of metres underground as a utility vehicle in the mining process, what do you do then?

Or if you are in a mining operation along the Amazons or in the Rio Grande du Sul where you are surrounded by dense tropical rainforests for hundreds of miles? What then?

Or in Papua New Guinea where these Defenders are among the very few vehicles capable of negotiating through rough tracks in the very misty and very dense very high altitude hardwood forests - what then?

Or at a lighthouse on the Southern tip of New Zealand where there is 12 months of of ice, sleet and snow and top speeds of only 10-15 Mph for about 2 minutes? Huh? Now what do you do?

Tricky?

You bet! ****CENSORED****

As far as I am aware no 2.2 sold Australia has the DPF anyway. (upto 2013MY anyway)

I am waiting to see if our new one has one being a 2014 MY

Ye mate, unfortunately LR Aus decided to take the models straight from UK in exactly the same configuration as UK - seems it worked out cheaper for them.

Previously they took the South African specs, so ye, the Aussie Defenders are identical to the UK models since around 2010 I think.

Even seatbelts, windshields, tyres are now all the same spec so they drive them straight off the boat directly to the customer complete with all the rubbish Belgian components attached to them like a filthy smell.

Luckily Aussies could give a toss for EU rules so there will be loads of old cobbers with all the gear to fix these things.

So far as I know the electronic mapping needs to be done by the South Africans or one of the Brits until one of the Aussies cracks the chip on the latest 2.2, other than that the Aussies just get on with quietly sorting the mess out without making a huge fuss about it all.

Your new 2014 2.2 will have a lovely DPF performance anchor and a CAT furnace blaster under the driver's cabin plus an airconditioner which only works at 70 mph with all the windows open - exactly what you need for equatorial Australia!

The old Air conditioner systems which used to the same as the good South African units are also a thing of the past.

In the extremely unlikely event that you happen to have a cold spell on the equator, at least the vehicle will heat up okay! ****CENSORED****

we run 2.2s with DPFs there are weeks, maybe months on end when they do not get above 15mph, but they are run for in 3hr blocks so do get to temp. no regen issues on 2.2s to date. Cheers

Nice!!!!

I was actually under the impression that Land Rover offered to stuff and frame 2.2 owners who don't experience regen problems, clearly my info is inaccurate!

How frequently have you done oil changes? and have you found any diesel in the oil? ****CENSORED****

When do you expect delivery, (we waited 6 months!) & what specs/options do you have?
Cheers, pickles.

30th March apparently. I am expecting an update on that tomorrow from the dealer. We signed the order on Nov 22nd.

In terms of spec; 90 SW (in std Aus spec, so air-con, Alpine stereo/sub etc etc) - Loire blue - Dual finish wheels and MTR's

That's it! although I already have one pile of accessories here from Duckworth parts to fit when it arrives!

Has Australia not moved to Euro5 somewhere in 2013? Thought that I read that somewhere, and that at some point in the last three months of 2013, new Puma 2.2 would start to be delivered with a DPF. Or do I have that wrong? Surely your dealer must be able to tell.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Ours was built in Sep '13, & has the "R" in the vin which apparently means it's not Euro V, so no DPF. My Dealer says it doesn't have one. There was another post here recently talking about what the Defender "Quick Start" manual says about the DPF,.....there is no such mention in my manual, which also has a different p/n to the one quoted for the UK manual.
Cheers, Pickles.

If yours does not have the DPF and it is delivered AFTER June 2013, well then you are one lucky guy.

We were advised by LRA during June 2013 that all 2.2 delivered as of that date would include the DPF - which is why we cancelled all outstanding orders. ****CENSORED****

Well mate, I reckon LRA gave you the wrong info. ULR (Dealer) tell me they've never seen a DPF on a Defender.
Cheers, Pickles.

My 2.4 air con works great even crossing the Simpson Desert in 45deg heat and doing 25kph, works much better without the cat though Smile that is just like have a furnace in the front with you, and no MOT in QLD so all good.
