fitting of genuine land rover RAI
Good evening.
I bring you a quesRAI , The fitting instructions for the RAI depicts an image suggesting the I simply drill a 5mm hole in the window frame and sort of self tap a bolt into it. I dont paticularly feel comfortable with the idea I was expecting to fit rivnuts.

Can anyone shed some feed back on how theres has been fitted and how its faring now please?

Ill probably go ahead and rivnut the bolts for peace of mind. Although I have a bracket idea in mind that would remove the need to drill into window frame.

Fitted a few now,,

It does seam brutal, just to tap onto the screen frame,, but had no issues with them so far.. and still secure

Just pull back the trim, and wiring inside first !! California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

Haha glad you mentioned that, I fear I would've just gone straight at it. Although when you say move the wires is the idea to go right through? In a nut and bolt fashion.

Good to hear that the self tap method is solid though

I have the Mantec plastic jobby Rai. Which I gather is the same as the Mantec supplied Land Rover plastic Rai. There is a stainless steel bracket held to the chimney by 2 self tapping bolts. The bracket is then bolted to the window frame using 2 self tapping bolts into approx 5 mm holes. After drilling I painted the edges. Used silicone grease under bracket and waxoyl ® on the inside of the frame around bolts. Beware drilling the window frame as there are wires running up the frame.

Thanks for the advice. I'll either fit a instructed using some silicone and wax oil. Or I may make up a frame... Along side the pipe adaptor to make it water tight.

the new plate is almost made, i had made a new plate that is the same shape as the vent indent on the wing, this is then getting a 102mm round steel tube welded into the centre(ish), this plate is then going to be welded onto the original metal plate the RAI came with, the modded plate will have studs the require Houdini like hands to apply nuts to the inner wing giving a tight fit to the wing, some silicone and nice thick makalor clips on the pipe will make it as water tight as ill be needing it to be,

i wanted the land rover catalogue look with the RAI as i much prefer it to any other, i don't like the drain pipe affect although lets face the fact that the drain pipe affect is the most water tight option.

I'll update with pics in the what did you do in your land rover thread, and prob update in the RAI threads I've been involved in, there will also be some dremmel action going on in the base of the air box.

Would be interested in seeing the finished bracket as driliing into the windscreen surround seems such a bad idea to me.

Someone on here did have issues with this and I think just Sikkaflexed a replacement bracket.

The bracket creation will begin next week, that is of course if the snorkel bracket is made correctly. Today is test day for it.

Me and a friend have toyed with a few ideas on how to finish the frame off at the top one was to clamp it between the roof and the windscreen frame. I think were gonna go with making a gutter clamp and then welding the frame edges to attach at the bulkhead brackets. Ill post up a thread once we start making it up
