Patriot Security Tilt/Cage Fitted to my DC
A couple of people showed some interest in the fact that I spent some of Saturday fitting my new Patriot Security Tilt and asked for some pics, etc.

As I said on the "what did you do today...." thread, it was a little challenging to fit in places, with one side panel having to be fitted slightly differently to the other. This wasn't due to the quality of the 'kit' itself, but rather the fact that the right hand tube that holds the front/back sticks together was fitted slightly lower than the left hand one from the factory (!).

Other than that, it was fairly straightforward, with all the rivets supplied, in bags, labelled with which panel they were destined for. I chose the natural aluminium finish, but you can have it powder coated for extra cost. However, I'm glad I didn't go for that due to the fact I had to use a hammer to 'encourage' the rear panel to fit so I was happy with it.

The kit comes supplied with the rear door already rivetted into place as a side opener. I wanted the door to open as a tailgate, lifting the tilt cover out of the way at the same time, so I drilled out the rivets, and replaced the hinge across the top. I'm sure you could order it this way to start with, as these are pretty much built to order. For convenience, but also as there was no other way of holding the rear door open once I'd changed the hinge over, I fitted a gas strut to one side. This seems to work great, steadily opening the door up out of the way, as soon as the 2 locks are disengaged.

The only let down (if you can call it that), was the delay in getting it delivered to me. Apart from not letting me know it hadn't been sent out (the second time it was due to arrive), Patriot were pretty good to deal with.

In all, it does appear to be a very secure cage, and I reckon it'll do exactly what it's designed to. The only other mod I'm going to make is to attach another piece of ally across the door's lower edge, so that it closes across the drop down tail gate. This would mean that the locks (also supplied with the kit) would do the job of locking both the upper door & lower tail gates.

I've attached a few pics below (sorry, I forgot to take any during the fitting stage!). If anyone's got any questions, or wants any help/tips with fitting theirs if they buy one, please give me a shout .

Hi Joao,
The standard finish of the tilt security cage is natural as shown. Yes I am sure Patriot will get it powdered coated for you. Minimum charge for powder coating is £25 + VAT. Alternatively we have several powder coaters close to us so if you wish your tilt security to be shocking pink I am sure that I can arrange it! Laughing

Current retail price is £674. Not sure what carriage would be to Lisbon however.

HTH

Blimey - another one! I thought I had the only one...

I have also modified the door to open upwards, but I thought that having exposed rivet heads rather compromised the security aspect of the cage, so the hinge is installed in the same way as the original side opening one...

Mine is Black, and is far less obvious as a result - I guess I should take some pictures of it...

Cheers

I also re-mounted the hinge/rivets in the same way as it was supplied originally. I assume the bottom line is that if someone is willing to drill out the rivets, then it wouldn't really matter what vehicle/arrangement I had.....ie, they'd get in somehow anyway! Mark

Please don't take this the wrong way - I'm genuinely intrigued. Given the cost and the faffing about with the door, why not just fit a hard top of some description? Darren

No problem....I had an IW top before this. It wasn't at all water tight. I've managed to get my tilt to be pretty much that now, with a little time and patience. The 'faffing' about with the door took me approx 30 minutes, including the fitting of the gas strut. Also (and probably the biggest thing) I much prefer the look of the canvas tilt on the DC.

It's also able to be locked, and as I said above, I'll be able to also secure the lower tail gate at the same time with a small mod.

The cost was £674 delivered, inc VAT, so I appreciate I could get a thin ally hard top (such as another IW/Gamic, etc), but they would also be much easier to get through than the cage above (they are made of much thinner material).

I know it perhaps isn't to everyone's taste, but a couple of people showed interest the other day, so thought I'd get a thread going Smile Mark

Hi Mark,

Nothing to do with taste - your truck, your choice - I just wondered if there was some particular benefit to this set-up over a conventional hard top. Darren
