Thanks for that , I had read your reply to that thread . The bit that concerns me how do I reset it ? The indie Said it had no reset on the scanner . Do I just ignore it . Or drop into dealers ? |

Hi cakey, their is a oil service reset in the dealer tol that should be done on a service. If the service reset does not get done it will eventually flag a fault for contaminated oil or words to the effect of as it does not know its been changed.
With the amount of ecus/cars I've seen now I've seen this many many times and some have had the service at the dealers yet it was still not done If you struggle with getting it done, pop over and I'll do it for you with the dealer tool. Pete. |

Cakey apparently it comes on prior to an impending DPF regeneration indication too?
Let us know how you get on......Good luck. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

So does the dpf regen still happen even though I thrash it all the time. I always thought the dpf regen came on when the pressure was over 25mbar on the sensor , as in grams of soot / ash .
Never seen the dpf light on . |

Sorry Cakey I have absolutely no idea. I do know driving cycles play a part but if you drive it each time like you stole it does this play a part too? Maybe Pete knows?

Yes the snapon tool defenetly does not do it, my mate in the year has one Re more power, turbos are at the moment limited due to low core stock but are coming in slowley now for me to do fitting and exchanges etc, The coolers we spoke about didn't give enough of a worthwhile power gain for the cost extra to make them. I've just today fitted a normal style info again to do some more back to back temp and power tests to prove the above. Re DPF , I can here when mine does a regen as the exhaust note changes as the egr opens in the regen process. Even while doing one or switched off during a regen I have never personally had the oil service light on. I feel quite sure in your cars case your light is as you suspect just because its not been reset when needed. If I get time tomorrow I'll log onto my car and look at the CAN traffic for the oil service reset, it may be something I can put into a small OBD tool that just does that job only for not a lot of money. That said. You are welcome to come over and I'll reset it for you no problem. Pete. Last edited by bell-auto-services on 31st Jan 2014 10:04pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Pete does this apply to the Defender?
We have a Freelander2 that really never gets warm, wife uses it to go to school 3 miles away and back. The DPF hasn't been a problem (assuming defender set up is similar). Only thing we have had to do is change the oil early at 6k due to the regen system, I wonder if the defender does this and if it does, does it warn you about it. Hi Pete
Yes the defender is the same idea, this can be a problem for short trip cars that run a simlar stratgie as you dont ever get the best mpg and you actually need to service them more than if it were used on longer runs daily due to the monetering system they have and the contamination happening etc. This is one of my main griped with DPF cars and most "marks" are simlar to the landrovers whereas if the DPF were removed and the software recalibrated as not to have it fitted (though ilegal from today) it would use less fuel overall and it will not and not need servicing so much and so early compared tot he book service interval due to oil contamination from mentioned above. My personal theory and experience has shown where possibile try and do a good run once a week to try and allow the regen if needed and keep things happy and if possibile drive enthusiastically if you get chance as it does help keep things happy. As you say changing the oil sooner and having the service interval reset at the same time other than when recomended is also a very good idea as the diesel content in the oil its self can not be good for the engine barings etc. Pete |

Very interesting replies .
My car use is on average 60- 80 miles a day but would say at an average speed of 26mph . On the open sections its upto 70 mph or 55mph for 4 miles , but mainly A roads Never seen the dpf light on , so not sure if it is amber / red etc. Changed oil and filter at 6000 but did not tell the car Always drive on the limit where possible but a bit of stop start in there |
