Fence Posts - Croesote (or old engine oil)
Someone on this forum will be able to advise me I'm sure Thumbs Up

I just got 15 4" fence posts delivered for a project. In the old days I would have bathed the lower end (the part in the ground) with real creosote, but that's no longer available.

I'll be concrete-ing the posts in.

Some people I know used to mix old engine oil with creosote. I have 10 litres of old engine oil kicking about...

So, the query is, is it worth mixing old engine oil with new products (i.e. creocote or creoseal), and does it improve things (make the posts last longer)? Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Ive always used a 50/50 mix.It seems to soak into the posts better mixed with the oil.
But beware it stays wet for a while so watch animals and kids Thumbs Up

Well...it's not widely available, but it can be ordered for "professional use"... Wink

I'll have to make do with Creoseal, but I'll try the 50:50 mix with engine oil Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

I've previously used the 50/50 mix and it the posts are short enough soak them in an old bath, weighed down. If too big put some in a 5 gallon bucket and bung the ground end of the posts in for a couple of days to let them soak it up the grain, they brush or spray the rest. A cheap 5 litre sprayer is the easy way for bulk jobs. Thumbs Up

Not sure if it too late but these guys are getting quite a lot of good press with their post sleeves... Guess it depends on how long you want the posts to last...

Thanks. That looks great! well priced too - if I had seen them earlier I may have been tempted to try a few.

Its not the bit in the ground that usually rots, its where the water gathers on the bowl that most people make in the concrete when putting the posts in. That shrink wrap on the posts works well or put the post in a bin bag before concreting it in and make sure the concrete comes above the soil level and slopes to allow the water to run away and not puddle at the post. 2005 110 TD5 XS running Alive Stage 1 and a bit and other toys

A little tip :
Mix 4L Creocoat (or any creosote substitute ) with 2.5L cheap oil based brown gloss paint. It makes the most amazing looking long lasting fence paint for around the same price as those useless waterbased ones Thumbs Up
