2012 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 USW Santorini Black
Whistle from Engine when cold and other issues - Advice Pls!
Evening all,

Defender is in the dealer today for its second service an of course some warranty issues.

1) excessive driving noise after 1000mile day trip - New rear Differential has been ordered under warranty!

2) Handbrake light flickers on and off when driving, they claim new brake fluid will fix it at a cost of £180.00! Any thoughts, I assumed it would just be the handbrake switch since they have tried to adjust it 4 times already. Park brake still binding after a long motorway run so they still haven't got the adjustment correct!

3) Lamp behind the temp gauge is out, they need to replace the full assembly for the heating controls, over £300 under warranty.

4) Since dreaded 1000mile trip 2 weeks ago, when I drive the car early morning and its cold, I get a Whistle from the engine in first and second gear at about 2000rpm. After about 30 seconds its gone. Any suggestions on what this may be?


Thanks for any advice on item 4 in advance, also if anyone has any experience on item 2 that would also be great.

No.4: It could be a couple of things from the airbox lid not sealed correctly to a failing bearing on the accessory belt to the belt itself slipping when cold, to a leaking manifold or a leaking boost hose etc etc.. The only way to be sure is when you first start the Puma have a listen in the engine bay and try and narrow down the area the noise is coming from. Out of curiosity what dealers are you using? Thanks for the advice, we shall see what the dealer finds tomorrow. Although I suspect I wont see my car for around 1 week with the work required.

I'll post again once I have a report.

I got mine from Taggarts in Motherwell and although they are a good dealer (Motherwell, at least from my own experience Rolling Eyes ) they will admit they don't sell that many defenders as they cater more for the other marques. Consider taking it to Morrisons in Stirling if you get no joy this time as they do sell loads of defenders and the workshop will have more experience in repairing and fault finding. JMTW. Thumbs Up

£180 to change the brake fluid Shocked ,I assume you have checked to make sure its up to the max (don't leave it to the dealer,lol),much lower can result in the light flickering on corners,bumps etc.
If you think it's the switch knock the brake off and just waggle the H/B lever.
If you have ABS it's worth changing the fluid every year or 2,but not at £180 a time. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

If its any help we have a few transits we do at work that have a whistle from cold and so far they all have loose turbos, so all you can hear is the turbo spinning up then once its warm it expands and all is ok. It might be worth checking the 4 13mm nuts / studs connecting the turbo to the cat they may be loose.

Point 2, how can changing the brake fluid have any affect on the hand brake?! two totally seperate systems unless ive missed sumfing! Shocked

/\/\/\ Handbrake warning light doubles as a low brake fluid/general brake fault warning light. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Got exactly the same symptom. I changed the belt and all bad bearings, but the whistle at 2k/3k rpm remains, only before the engine gets warm and only on cold mornings. By looking into the engine bay and listening carefully, it seems to come from near the turbo. Not sure if it's the turbo itself...

What I'll say is pure speculation, but I was wondering: to me, the whistle happens on cold days only. During the summer, I never hear it. It makes a lot of sense to me that it can be a seal problem, considering metal contracts with cold. Also I notice the whistle disappears when the engine gets hot. In the end, I believe I'm having the same issue with the turbo seal. Thank you very much for sharing this. 2020: Defender 110 SW 300 Tdi 2004 Alpine White
