TD5 Smoking
Hi guys . Im a newbi to the forum world and a new proud owner of a td5 03 model

I purchased my defender in October last year and I wanted a little more driveability so I treated my self to a remap snorkel and egr removal kit for Christmas . I fitted and the parts and went for a remap after I must say it was for more responsive and could feel the gains of torque BUT... I noticed that once my foot was down to floor on acceleration it seemed to be hesitant in reving but it still reved up and there was little black smoke... So I went back to the guy who mapped it and he said to unplug the MAF which I did and it made a huge difference but it black smokes on all gear changes,, so I was told to buy a new MAF which I did from ebay for £35 so it was not a genuine one,, however I fitted it and I did notice the plug sensor was a very tight fit but though nothing of it,, anyway it drive and accelerates very good just like it did with the MAF unplugged but still smokes..
So im totally in the dark here ,, is the MAF I bought a load of crap and not working properly,, so should I buy a genuine VDO/SIEMENS one or is it the remap? or even a blocked CAT .. I also have noticed a lot of oil around the turbo intake breather pipe ,,??

Any suggestions greatly appreciated guys..

Hi

Welcome to the forum.

I do advise if you need to change the maf you fit VDO/SIEMENS, some of the cheaper ones can cause havoc with the car in many ways.

The car should not be hesitant on reving up really, it may be good if you can get hold of a diagnostic tool or speak with the tuner who did it for you to have a look to see if something is out of place. it could be a million and one things causing the hesitant feeling and smoke including the tune its self a little strong for your cars setup.

Do check all your hoses for splits and make sure all the clamps are tight.

Pete

I would agree here 100% .. most cheap maf never give the right readings. ( I have had problems with td4 freelander ones . you quote for bosch one ,hour later owner rings up says I can get one a lot cheaper on bay explain about not reading right , normally still want cheap one ,they buy it ,we fit it , they come back week later , we fit bosch and its cost them more in the end

Thanks guys for the advice,, I certainly be changing the MAF .. and checking my hoses.. or is it worth fitting silicon performance hoses and new clips too?
The VDO/SIMENS MAF'S on ebay are about £70-90 is that about right for a genuine MAF ?
someone told me that my cat could be blocked? or is that bad advice ..

as I live in Swansea anyone know of a competent tuner that could take a look? as the guy who did it for me I felt was quite novice with a laptop and hadn't done many defenders

Sounds like a combination of problems, and possibly the ECU reverting to a default fuel ratio setting, and the smoke is possible appearing because of an incomplete / poor tune, or that the tuner only turned the fuel up (somehow).
A diagnostic is the first thing to do, as it could well give a simple answer.

As said, the cheap MAF sensors are not worth a dime, nevermind the £30-40 they ask for. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

with a diagnostic wold a normal mot type garage be able to do that ? or is it a specialist land rover tuners job? the guy who remapped it didn't have any diagnostic system.. im starting to think may be its a 50/50 problem with the MAF & the remap that's been put in..

once I buy a new proper MAF i'll start looking into having it looked at by a proper tuner

cheers guys

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

£70 -£90 is about right Thumbs Up

Get rid of the EGR Valve & the CAT.

Check intercooler hoses for wear etc. You can fit better hoses & clips

Better send your ECU to someone like Pete @ BAS for a proper job Thumbs Up Chris

that seems like a good plan cheers..

the mods ive done so far are
egr removal k&n safari snorkle and a remap..

I will be buying the MAF this weekend..and next then I will buy silicon hoses, decat and straight through pipe.. and will most certainly be sending the ecu away so it can be done properly

what about the intercooler ? can you clean it out or is it best just to buy a bigger alloy one ?
