If I have my 110 aircon running and want heat, I get hot air out of the right side vent and cold air out of the left hand side. Anyone else got this problem?
Land Rover tell me that 'they all do it' and so can't fix it!! Warranties on my 09 plate XS Station Wagon: - 1. Chasis not straight on rear outriggers (accessories will not fit as they foul the body). Land Rover said what do you expect from a hand built car! They are all like it so can't do anything. 2. Rear heated screen not working - replaced. 3. Hand brake ineffective, leak from transfer box. seal replaced 4. Engine managment software fault - software updated. 5. Paint on aircon grill below main radiator grill blooming with alluminium oxide - resprayed 6. Both front wheel steering swivel joints leaking - seals replaced. 7. Read door seal leaking - fitted correctly. 8. Front door window seal leaking - fitted correctly. 9. Bonnet release catch siezed, rusting! 10. Rear mud flaps fell off, bolts not tightened on fron ones either! 11. Aircon fault???? Have I got a the joke Defender with 20 factory fitted faults? 9 more to find then I guess? If you can't climb on it, don't drive it! |

Some of those faults are common. How out was your chassis? out of interest Mike |

Aparently, the main fore and aft parts of the chasis are the critical elements and they are OK, the two outriggers on the back of the chasis are out, canted forward by about 13mm. Go to your dealer and have a look at the backs of all the new Defenders and you will see that they are all out by a similar amount. Check out a TD5 or earlier ones and they are not out. Guess that Land Rover must have introduced a new production method for the chasis build.
Just because they are all like it doesn't make it right though! I have managed to make my military bumperette fit but they both touch the body panels and I guess the paint will suffer soon? If you can't climb on it, don't drive it! |

Really want a defender, but its things like this that keep putting me off
They seem to build 90% of the car at the factory, and 10% under warranty at the dealers? Is QC really that bad? Having said that, I was at a dealer with our D3 earlier this week (EGR's, great technology) and they had a new 110 waiting to be PDI'd that looked really straight and tidy compared to some of the early models I saw, and what you see on here. Thought perhaps things were better? |

Don't be put off. Remember - forums like this focus our attention on the problems. Mine's an early one (2007) and I've had a few niggling problems but none of them has made me regret buying the Defender. The 3 yr warranty sorts a lot of it out and forums like this really help to diagnose whether there really is a problem or whether it's just the way the cars are. The new ones should be pretty good now (new clutch design, new software, new vacuum pump, new sump...). You'll still be at risk of the Midlands Manufacturing gremlin but the vehicles are pretty sound (within the limits of their design) and you can fiddle with quite a bit yourself. True, I appreciate forums are always bad, but some of the recent things I read seem like they should have been long sorted
I should explain we have a Disco3 the wife drives, so I know first hand the dealers do sort it, but at the moment my Alfa is saving the day every time the D3 conks out (When an Alfa is more reliable, LR have issues!) and if I swap to a 110 then we just have to hope the dealer has more than 1 courtesy car I suppose! Residual on the Defender still seems to be very strong, so does not seem like you would get burnt in the long run if you changed your mind anyway... |

TallPaul if you can be so easily swayed maybe...just maybe a Defender may not be for you! I bought one not because I needed one, but for a sense of individuality, heritage and because I really wanted one...warts 'n' all! I love my Defender and hunting round they appear to be holding their value and attractiveness exceptionally well. I also seek solace from the fact that if I do experience problems by posting them on here someone will be along shortly to advise. The camerarderie and 'esprit de corps' you get from owning a Defender I have only experienced with one other vehicle, but not so prolific as with a Defender. Subsequently do NOT get put off by the problems posted here as Alantd said! They are only usually here as people want a suitable resolution. Mind you as with all walks of life 'Defenderland' have their Victor Meldrews too! The adventure far outweighs the niggles in my view! Dive in!!! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! Last edited by K9F on 15th Apr 2010 2:27pm. Remember in 2015 (or sometime after) a new Defender will come out. It actually might increase the value of the current one - last of its kind, and all that - but you never know. You'll certainly not lose much on it in the next couple of years. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

Yep, all good advice chaps, thanks
I am not easily swayed, but last year I looked at it, and my little girl had just been born, wife on maternity and all that so even though it was a decision with heart not head, I had to be sensible and wait a bit. I drive an Alfa at the moment, if that's not a reference for buying a car with soul not a spreadsheet I don't know what is!!! Trying to get hold of current (post April 1st) price list, new LR website does not have it (can get to old one with Google) so just gave up and ordered post brochure from LR. Should have got one when I was at the dealer getting the D3 back on Tuesday. There was a lovely Stornaway (my chosen colour) 110 Utility parked up near the demo up'n'down bit at the dealer, I think it was a sign. I spent some time stalking round it like a Monkey at a Monolith in 2001 space oddesey |

No photoshop on work PC, but here is snap from mobile, combine in your mind.
[/img] Note bright light reflected from setting sun, I am sure I heard a chorus of angels as well as being blinded and yet mystically drawn towards it... (Sorry to OP, this was fresh from factory with no plates for a customer I assume, did not get a chance to ask anyone how the air-con was working....) |
