i get 27 to 29 mpg but only get that because i try to hold myself back and rule the road at my own pace, when i'm just enjoying what is the coolest car on the road, the figures start to drop, this got me thinking that all these eco cars might only get there better mpg because you sit in them and loose the will to live, and to support this idea just look to the very scientific study (ok it was a race on top gear) done with a toyota pr###s and a bmw m3, the m3 got better mpg because its a better drive,

Carefully, whilst wearing gloves and a mask....Alternatively don't on it in the first place!!! Post remap, post wheel/tyre replacement still returning over 27mpg on a well-behaved period of driving! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

it is off-topic I know, but someone did mention PRIUS and I have to respond.
Test drove a new Toyotas Prius (1.8 Atkinson cycle). It has three modes, EV, ECO and Power. EV - keeps to battery and motor only and is not reallt suitable for anything other than shunting around a car-park. Eco - dulls the throttle response and reduces the input from the petrol engine and relies more on regen braking/coasting and the battery/motor combi. Power - keeps using battery/motor and regen braking, but allows the engine to cut in sooner and also sharpens the throttle response. I have to say that in everyday traffic I couldn't use Eco as I coudl not get out of junctions safely/quick enough and it was painfully slow and sluggish. Power mode was better and allowed the car to at least attempt to keep up with traffic, performance was barely adequate. In Eco it was pulling about 62mpg, whilst in Power mode and driving slower than in my current Focus and Mondeo, but desperately tryign to keep up with traffic it dropped down to approx 40mpg. The Focus (1.6 petrol) averages 35mpg in town and 40-45mpg on a run. The Mondeo (2.0 TDCi 140) averages 40-45mpg in town and 50-55mpg on a run. The ride/handling of the Pruis is poor, she is softer sprung than either Ford (both have the Sports suspension), yet she is not as smooth as either Ford, finds all the bumps and undulations, pitches and rolls in bends and generally feels like she is 20+ years behind them! The brakes did work however Harvey |

No you didn't have to respond at all! Not a squeak! Not a murmour! Thanks anyway! Won't be trading my Defender in for a Prius! Hope you're not too disappointed! Did you know Toyota offer special prices on staff cars if you take a Prius? The Toyota GB car park is full of the damn things, wonder where there good "sales figures" come from?
A modern super-mini, I am thinking of the Fiat 500 here with the 1.3 Diesel for example, that does combined 72.4 on paper will struggle to return less than 60mpg even if you drive the socks off it. You can't fit a roof rack and drive to Singapore in it however... or probably get out of an average UK village in a flood... |
