Pre 200/300 tdi engine reliability?
I'm looking at a rebuilt 90 which has galv chassis and lots of work done to sort doors, suspension, bulkhead, interior refurbed etc, 1990 yr model.

The engine is the original unit, a pre 200/300, even though it's a tdi, 115k miles, serviced with all filers etc.

I don't mind being down on power as I've recently sold a n/a diesel and it never really bothered me as I don't intend doing long journeys, mainly local short runs, but are there any issues to look for that I should know about?

Assuming its the 2.5TD then its not the finest engine ever made. Having said that, if its survived this long then it will probably be one of the good ones. If you can find Defender 200 tdi then it will drop straight into it when that engine does pack in. If the rest of it is in good nick then dont let the engine put you off, its far easier to change a engine than a bulkhead or the chassis.

Pete.

Above post my thoughts exactly when I bought a 1989 90 last year for knocking about in. The one you're looking at will be a 2.5 TD for that year (assuming original engine!), allegedly not the best engine, but the one in mine has been great, no problems with it (Ok, it's not a Puma!), but fine for trundellng about in, uses no oil/water, and no leaks!! Very Happy

The reason I bought this was cos the rest of it was very sound - great chassis/bulkhead, and everything worked on it, only needed a bit of cosmetic tidying. As Zinke says, the later 200tdi will drop straight in if the TD engine ever goes - but while its still working good, I'll leave as it is! 1959 Series 2 Ragtop

Thanks both for the above replies, it is a TD engine that's fitted, which is the original unit, after speaking to the person who's done the chassis exchange the chassis etc, he said he'd used the vehicle himself as a run-around before doing the chassis, new door bottoms, bulkhead etc etc, almost everything is perfect on it, just as I'd have done it, but the engine is the weak link, seems a shame to have gone to all that trouble and then not put a 200 or 300 tdi engine in.
Anyway, still thinking about it before parting with my hard earned!
Thanks again.
