Driving home from Nottingham to Stockport this evening, stopped for fuel. Came to set off after filling up, no headlamps
![]() So after searching the forum, going to take the switch out to test it. Any other likely failure points? 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

Ok, its not the switch. It looks pretty new. Got home on the sidelights. Shorting the red and the blue does not turn the lights on. Shorting the red and brown puts the sidelights on.
It looks like it might be the dip switch thats at fault, its very loose on the steering column, and the it looks like the plastic casing is cracked. Its a bit difficult to see inside the metal surround. Any tips for getting the steering wheel off to get a closer look? It won't budge. ![]() 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

Either a puller tool which is best or brass mallet with the nut at end of the thread giving the colum a thump whilst pulling the wheel Defender 90 TD5 County -
You need only two tools in life: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesnt move and it should: WD-40. If it moves and shouldnt: duct tape it. |

As above.
I loosen the nut, (not remove it). Pull like ![]() Did you have dim dip on yours? Andy |

No it does not have dim dip.
Looking at wiring diagram now, and the fact that the main beams come on with the flash function only, but neither dip or main work in the normal position, could be the relay. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

There isn't a relay for the headlights, which is why the switches tend to burn out.

There is a relay that energises the headlamp switch when the ignition is on. However, even if I short the wires to the switch, the light still do not come on. So looking like its the dip/main/indicator/horn switch unit.
Only problem is, I can't get the feckin steering wheel to budge so I can take it off the vehicle. Shall look again tomorrow. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

You should not need to remove the wheel to be able to test the switch, just remove the cowl. I think from memory there is a blue cable that fits on a pin that can come off giving no lights.
Got a spare set of switches here, should you need a temporary set ![]() Andy |

Sorted
![]() It was the dip/indicator/horn switch that had self destructed. The contacts were very burnt. Got a new switch today, and all back to normal. One final question - When fitting the new switch, what is the correct way to align the self cancel indicator ring (the blue ring that engages with the back of the steering wheel) There is 2 ways to do it, 180 degrees apart! 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

Been ages since I played, but it has a small mark on it that should point towards indicator stalk from memory.
Did you manage to get wheel off ok? Andy Last edited by landy andy on 9th Jan 2014 11:25pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Ahh ok. It has a small plastic tab that can be at the top or the bottom. I have self cancel on left hand turns, but on right hand, the indicator cancels as I turn the wheel to the right, so I guess I have it 180 degrees out. Job foir tomorrow.
BTW, I had thought the headlamps were getting a bit dim for a while now, and this is obviously a warning of pending destruction of the switch. Now they are nice and bright once again. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

There is a very small arrow moulded into it as well. The arrow needs to point to the switch
