Or injector seals and washers? When my seals first started to go I found it hard to start in a morning but once the engine was running it seemed to run fine. Try doing the fuel purge before starting and see if it's starts better this could be your problem.

I'll try the fuel purge tomorrow, I did first think about the seals but why would it start with the old ECU happily?? I do have the maf disconnected as its dead and has been for a year or so, my mate just suggested that because maf is disconnected then the ECU is looking for the values hence the 20second rough running at start up then it just switches to default hence the perfect running after the 20secs. Anyone else experienced this?

Did you have any need to reprogram injector codes when you switched ECU ? I seem to recall that the codes are on the injectors and the data in the ECU needs to be matched.
What I'm not sure about is if that is just an issue with swapping like for like flashable later ECU's and whether it's less important when 'upgrading' Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |

Hi Sandylands,I had a problem with my MAF a couple of months ago and disconnected it a few times as a process of elimination and when i disconnected it it ran rough for a short period on very reduced power then ran great, i also assumed the ECU was looking for MAF readings before switching to a default setting.
I bought a new MAF from BAS and the problem was solved,I would fit a new MAF before looking to far for other problems. 2005 Td5 90 XS Steve |

I think if I knew the maf was dead a year ago, I would have changed it straight away. Especially if I was having running problems

Thanks Lou sparts that's what I wanted to hear, a new genuine Maf from island 4x4 is on its way so fingers crossed. Mk1 collector I totally agree, I only never bothered as I was told by what I originaly thought to be a very experienced landrover specialist that a Maf only controlled egr and was pointless connecting it as mine is blanked. It's literally horrifying to know how many people trade as a specialist and know so very little. Also all injector codes have been changed over, as I said it runs the best I've known a td5 run once the starting issue clears.
Thanks again all for the replys |

Happy New 2014. So I fit the new maf and the problem still remains. Obviously as the msb unit starts the car but drives awful and the nnn drives lovely but won't start it properly then I can only think it's a mapping fault rather that sensors. Surely a failed sensor would be failed on both ecus? I'm told that an msb ecu will always be better for an early engine although I don't no why. So my msb has a chip in it and td5 inside will do me a replacement chip. My question is does the chip actually change things like throttle response or does it just boost power?

If its ECU related then i would go talk to Gary at Alive, hes very good with TD5 ECU's and will probably sort you out a NNN ECU to run correctly on your Defender.
