Big end & main bearings failure on Puma 2.4 engines?
As seen on another forum in a discussion about common D3 problems:

The problem exists with the TDV6 2.7 the TDV8 and the Puma 2.4. They all have the same issues because of a design fault very common to FORD.

Then do not engineer keeps or notches on their bearings. With time the bearing turns on the crank and blocks the oil gallery then seizes. Causing torque twist and resulting in a broken crank shaft sometimes.

This happens to less than one percent of total cars sold and because you cannot procure component parts it becomes a very expensive exercise. So I am sorry to say it is not only restricted to the Disco 3.



Has anyone experienced or heard of this happening on a Puma 2.4 engine? Question --

As someone who works on Transits on a daily basis, and has done since long before the Puma engine arrived ... i can honestly say that in over 1000 vehicles that is one problem never encountered Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

As with the 2.2 not having a DPF and the ECU being different for your market if there are issues over there I suggest they may be 'self-induced' perhaps with a different standard, but I've never heard of any big-end and main bearing issues over here???? It would have been BIG news too. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Sorry Naks but I have to go along with the general opinion previously posted. In generic terms a failure across the board would indicate a manufacturing defect. However I have not heard (not saying I know anything) of a drastic increase in bearing failures other than the owner failing to keep up oil levels. The bearings and shells in use in my Puma have been around for many years and are of a proven design. However not to be to generic there are circumstances when these bearings do fail a lot quicker, removal of the air filter and not following the service schedule are the most obvious candidates.
