A tin of dog food ....
I was told that it was the ideal 'emergency ration' to take when hiking, the idea being that you'd probably eat a Mars bar or something well before you actually needed it to keep alive, you'd have to be pretty desperate to eat a tin of dog food |

Yea I've heard that said about dog food but having done many years of mountaineering I'll stick with the boil in a bag Wayfarer meals. Nice hot but equally edible cold if needed.
Thanks for mentioning a shovel, unfortunately I've left that at my parents house down south after I shifted a couple of tonnes of gravel in the summer. I'll have to look into getting another. I'm pretty sure there is a foil blanket in the first aid kit so that's sorted. Thanks for your suggestions guys and girls, I never had to worry in the old L200 because it always was stocked with tools, straps, ropes etc all supplied by a previous employer but having to sort it out myself now. 2007 (57) Defender 90 (Sold) Looking for another to replace it. I carry a spade (for mud) and add a snow shovel with a bolt-on head in the winter, makes it easier to store in the back of a 90.
I also carry a spare unlocked phone with a Manx telecom PAYG simcard, when in the UK it will 'roam' on all UK networks which means you will have best chance of getting a call/text through. the 999 or 112 system does this anyway, but if it's not that urgent but your own phone dies/breaks then you have a decent backup. Just thought I'd update people on the ongoing upgrades I'm making to my 90. Firstly, I've spent the day cleaning and prepping the 90 for the 600 mile trip to my parents house. I've luckily got a few weeks off work (but before anyone says anything - I did have to work night shifts over Christmas and will again over New Year so I think I deserve a few weeks off!) So I washed the truck today, topped up oil and screenwash and just got to check the tyre pressures in the next day or so.
I've planned to meet a friend and we're going greenlaning one weekend in January - probably going to do the Fosse Way and a few of the lanes around the Cotswolds so that means I'll definitely be replacing my tyres. I had previous alluded to getting some BFG AT's but I was struggling with the high postage costs to get them to the Scottish Highlands so I'll get them in down south and hopefully I'll be able to get one garage to beat anothers price and get a good deal that way. I also attached a universal phone mount to the dash of the 90 today. I had planned to get 2 - one for my phone and the other for my iPod (the choice of radio stations up here is rubbish: Radio 1, Radio 2, BBC Radio Scotland and MFR) but Tesco only had one in stock. It's just a normal windscreen suction mount with the back unattached and then stuck to the dash with some double sided tape. It does the trick alright, I've attached a photo below. I've positioned it so that it doesn't foul on the indicator. Luckily the weather never got too bad up here in terms of snow so far (touch wood). We did get a bit of heavy wind and rain but I was either at work or safely tucked up in bed at the time so it never really affected me. So far the only bit of kit I've needed is my waterproof coat and trousers! 2007 (57) Defender 90 (Sold)

Well I don't know what peoples opinions on Autoglass are but I've definitely got a clear one. I had my windscreen replaced in June last year after it cracked. All replaced on insurance but it turned out that they didn't replace the rubber seal. It pretty much leaked from the off after then but I struggled to find time to get it replaced due to work commitments. I decided to give them a ring last week to see if they'll replace the seal and they agreed to carry out the work FOC under their warranty.
They turned up this week with a new seal and a screen just in case and replaced the seal and all seemed good. Unfortunately, I then fell down the stairs so haven't been out for a couple of days but went out today and found the passenger floor mat wet which I thought was fine as I hadn't tipped the water off it since the seal was replaced. Driving down the motorway I notice water coming up between the screen and the seal on the inside To say I was angry might be a little polite. It's shocking that after they replace the seal and guarantee the work, it lets more water in than before! I'm just waiting for them to confirm that they'll come out Monday and try again. 2007 (57) Defender 90 (Sold) Looking for another to replace it. The road less travelled.... is a muddy one! |

I've used Autoglass and been absolutely delighted with their service - the chap who turned up was a real car enthusiast with real pride in the job - job done to my 100% satisfaction.
However when I phoned up to arrange the replacement screen I was offered two options and a tip which I will pass on. If the weather is lousy and you can drive to one of their service centres - they will do the job in a nice warm dry environment with a technician whose hands aren't freezing cold and the rubber seal is going hard and etc etc. The other option was - have the job done on my driveway in between downpours. Realise that if you are up in the Northern Wastelands of the soon to be People's Democratic Republic of Porridgeland - visiting one of the Autoglass centres might be problematic but if you are heading South then you will be passing a few of them? Might be worth booking your repair at an Autoglass English Service Centre |

To update the ongoing saga with Autoglass, 2 fitters came out the other day, removed the screen and found that the last fitter (from the Bristol branch) had used a silicon sealant rather than a non setting, flexible sealant between the screen and the rubber. The result is that it no longer leaks into the footwell!
I've just got back from the local garage where the 90 has spent the day being serviced. I've got to say that I've had some fantastic service from them today. Full service, all the oils and fluids changed plus they carried out a full inspection of the truck. They put some solder on the failed headlight switch free of charge so that now works and they replaced the rear brake pads with some second hand ones they had free of charge. Knowing that my MOT is due in March, they listed a few advisories: Advise replacement of rear brake pads and calipers N/S & O/S rear shocker top & bottom bush O/S rear outer drive flange & half shaft N/S front swivel housing rusted All in all pretty good customer service, I'll definitely be returning to them for the MOT. It's nice to be able to praise a garage rather than moan about poor customer service or quality of work. 2007 (57) Defender 90 (Sold) Looking for another to replace it. Finally got around to fitting my LED beacon and switch. I know there is a separate thread about beacons and lightbars at the moment but mine is fitted as per the requirement as part of Highland 4x4 Response group. I went for a Redtronic Megaflash, it doesn't have the most flash patterns on the market but it's well built, I've got the option to synchronize smaller LED grill lights with it in the future plus it's got extra wires for running at 25% power (just like the low power or dim function in most emergency services vehicles) and running at extra bright. I bought the lightbar and switch through EVS.
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I wasn't sure where I was going to fit the switch when I first got it due to the awkward shape of it but with a little prying with some pliers, it clamps on the lip of my cubby box and the lid shuts without issue. Also means it can't be seen when the lid is shut and I can't accidentally turn it on. All in all a good purchase. I could do with getting a secondary fusebox in the future though. Most of my extras are running with inline fuses which is fine but my battery box is a mess! 2007 (57) Defender 90 (Sold) Looking for another to replace it. The road less travelled.... is a muddy one! So I have had my Defender for 12 months now and it was due it's MOT today. It passed with no advisories but I think that was due to the fact they were carrying out work that would have shown up as advisories. It wasn't a cheap day, they replaced the rear brake pads, discs and calipers, replaced the N/S front swivel ball assembly and replaced the top and bottom bushes on the rear shocks. The only thing left will be to replace the worn O/S rear half shaft when that arrives. I think I'll be doing some overtime shifts to pay for all of it!!! 2007 (57) Defender 90 (Sold)

So this is a job that I've needed to do for a while but weather and work commitments haven't allowed it but today I started work on my rear crossmember. As you can see from the photos below, the paint had thinned a lot and some surface rust was present.
Click image to enlarge I rubbed this down and put 4 or 5 coats of a zinc oxide primer on. It's come out with a really smooth finish. Unfortunately I have to do all this work outside and the wind has picked up so will have to try and finish it off later or tomorrow. It will be finished with several coats of black Hammerite. Looks good I reckon mine will need doing soon as it's showing some surface rust too.
I would mask off the towball too (just the ball part at least) as you don't want too much paint on there. Firstly the paint will chip off when towing a trailer anyway, and the paint will actually make it slightly bigger than 50mm. Admittedly it won't be much bigger but depends on the hitch & how tightly adjusted it is.
