Make sure you get genuine seals, there are plenty out there being advertised as genuine but are fakes.

Yes, ordered from Nick (TheLargeOne from Disco3 forum) at Yeovil Land Rover, along with new rear exhaust and HD rear springs, so in for a busy week...!

Cheers

I haven't had chance to do any investigation, but after starting ok this morning, it took a few attempts to start this evening.

Also, when I got home and got out of the car to open the garage, the engine (which was running) just stopped as I got back in the car. It started immediately again.

Very odd...

Cheers

I am also having this problem on my DEF90 02 TD5, bought it and drove it home approx. 300miles.. no starting problems.

I replaced the broken filter housing with a complete Britpart unit and spent a lot of time cleaning thoroughly and checking from workshop manual that the valves were in the correct place, only problem is that the pipes fit on but not securely so the only answer was to use a few to many cable ties to help out.. Is this the standard on TD5's? Is there a better method of securing pipes?

First time it was difficult to start (cranking fast but not firing) then after approx. x4 8 second cranks progrsivly gets better then fires up.

I thought it was quered after a c. 2k drive it didn't miss a beat and started no problem.

Twice today it has started, ran ok for a few seconds then cut out.. I seems to reduce the amount of cranking to get restarted buy using the over fuel mode.

Its as if the fuel is draining back into the tank!

I have been told about the injector looms being faulty due to being constantly covered in oil? What are the symptoms of a faulty injector looms?

Also in the filter housing there are x 2 valves one looks like a simple oneway valve, does anyone know what the other is?

The white one in the front left is the air bleed valve, this one is important in the fact that air must be able to pass through it to allow air to be purged from the system at initial pump prime, i.e. when you first turn the ignition on and you hear the pump running untill the optimum pressure is reached. If it won't allow air out(back into the tank via the pump housing) then you are effectively purging air through the injectors untill diesel reaches them.
The other, found in the back left port is a one way valve which LR decided to do away with on many(mine's a 2002 15P engine and hasn't got one fitted) and is only really found on older Td5's, that's if they haven't been taken out and thrown away.
Mine had real issues on starting, would take lots of cranking even after a fuel purge cycle. When I cleaned the air bleed valve(cracked it open and scraped some of the filter/gauze/brillo pad) so I could suck and blow through it I've had no issues since. Have a look towards the end of this thread..... http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic24871-15.html

Tried to start mine this morning after a short drive and it failed again.

This time I noticed the heater plug warning light wasn't coming on. I gave the driver's side seat box a good wallop and it started (and the heaters came on).

I suppose there is a relay under the seat that controls the heaters..?

cheers

Had a similar starting problem with mine. There are two relays for the fuel pump under the drivers seat, a yellow one and a black one. The spade connectors had become loose on the wiring plug it also looked like it had overheated due to arcing. Close them up with pliers and see if that sorts it.

I think the black Relay is the main relay and this feeds power to the fuel pump relay which is yellow on my 90 but sometimes green. The main relay also feeds power to the ECM and MAF Sensor. The female spades on the connectors to these relays can become enlaged and loose over time giving starting and poor running issues.

There also a relay for the glow plug under the seat (another yellow one). If you have air con or ABS there will be additional relays for these also. Hope I have got that right as it is a few years since I had this problem. If you have tried the other suggestions have a look at these connections under the drivers seat. The fact that it started when you hit the seat box makes me think your problem is here.

All the best

Did some digging after I posted this and it looks like Landrover changed the location of the fuel pump relay and main relay from the Engine compartment fuse box (99 to 02 model year) to under the drivers seat 02 model year on. Perhaps someone better informed than me can confirm this. Ie where are these relays located on 99 to 02 model year Td5 Defenders.

My 90 is late 2001 but 2002 model year and both the main and fuel pump relay are definitely under the drivers seat and the connections give trouble as indicated but I have read a Workshop manual suggesting both relays are located elsewhere for earlier TD5 Defenders.

on my 2000 defender my main relay is under my seat, but the fuel pump relay is infront of the gear levers.
There is another relay under the seat, I think it must be glow plugs.
I did suspect that something had changed in the production at some point.

Thanks for clarifying that. In mine the main relay sits beside the fuel pump relay under the seat and was the main relay that gave problems.

If you feel you need to change any of the relays go for genuine parts.
Halfords ones don't work at all.
