First check that wouldn't hurt would be the glow plugs as you infer that it's the first start of the day and don't forget there is only 4 to start with so if another has gone then there will be 2 cylinders receiving fuel and initially not firing correctly.

What is the output voltage on the maff at idle speed ? Measure the output on the centre pin of the plug while it is still connected to the maf.

Sounds very much like a glowplug problem.

Cheers for the replies, checked MAF and all seems fine. Although a connector that fits to the air box wasn't connected, but didn't make any difference once connected.
Previous owner was advised it was a problem with throttle pedal/potentiometer by a non 4x4/landy garage - does that sound like something that could throw up this problem? I'm a farmer so I like to think I'm pretty good with tools but the thought of snapping a glow plug over the Christmas period fills me with dread! |

Sorry for delay - rushing to get things done and all that. Can't remember voltages off the top of my head but was in line with figures I found on the net.
Seems to be getting worse, if its left for more than an hour it does it now. Runs sweet as a nut when its going though. Tried a new throttle pedal but no joy. To start it you have to have the throttle right down and keep the starter running for a couple of seconds. Then runs really rough for around 10 secs and then it begins to actually sound like a TD5 but it takes ages for the revs to actually reach idling speed. Like its really slowly building up to idling speed over about another 10 seconds. I'll have to get her booked in to Indy in the new year but would be good to have a go at something myself if it's something simple |

Not sure if this could contribute to it but areas in the South East have been suffering from that diesel waxing problem in the milder temperatures. Wonder if the problem getting more pronounced is linked to the temps gradually dropping??
Would it be worth worth removing/checking/replacing the fuel filter and running a bit of anti-wax additive in the fuel for a while ? Just a thought and perhaps a fairly quick check, if nothing else to eliminate. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |

Whilst changing the filter pull out the air bleed valve from the front left pipe fitting on the top of the filter head and try it without it fitted, I had allmost similar symptoms and by making sure the valve worked properly(it has just got some gauze in it that does block) I've eliminated my problem. The motor can run with the valve being absent, in fact some specialists just leave them out.

Before leaving it to sit, next time remove the water header tank top and leave it off, then do the same start test a hour or so later. does it still do the fault ? If not do the same and leave it overnight this time with the cap off. Pete |

Hi there - should have updated sooner!
Traced back to the ECU funnily enough. When swapped for the indys test ECU it starts first turn of the key with instant throttle response, and when mine is plugged back in it goes back to spluttering with no throttle response. Hopefully bite the bullet and buy a 2nd hand ECU today. Cheers |

On another note - I've been informed the ECU i need is part no NNN500020. I was just wondering if other part numbers would be alright in it?
I've been offered a NNN500250 which I understand is from a Disco, but has apparently been reprogrammed for use in a Defender. |

Glad you found the problem, you should only use NNN500020 where possibile as the NNN500250 was for an odd discovery varient they did and was only ever used on that model really.
