Battery cut out switch
Hi All,
With all the talk of security I am considering a battery cut out switch, however, can you wire it so that the supply to the alarm and clock is maintained (please be gentle as electrickery is a black art as far as I am concerned.) For info I have a 2004 TD5 with factory standard alarm and imobiliser .

The radio supply can be interrupted as I have non standard item that doesn't need a code etc.

Any help is appreciated.

I was thinking of doing the exact same thing and my plan was just to break the starter motor supply or fuel punp supply (like the immobiliser) but it all helps

Yes, run a permanent bypass around the switch that incorporates a small fuse. That way, if somebody tries to start it without the key switch sctivated the fuse just blows rather than having anything melt. Darren

a resistor is better - get the right size so that enough, but not too much current can flow. something like this (random one, so spec is almost certainly wrong: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/wirewound-3-watt-22-ohm-resistor-w22r)

This sort of resistor will turn excess current into heat, rather than blowing, like a fuse. Whilst you could get a resetable fuse, it will be harder to locate it for access to reset.

Thanks for that the by pass idea sounds good, I guess a 1 or 2 amp fuse would be fine as the alarm and clock current draw is minimal.

Thumbs Up

Just so you know putting a switch on the fuel pump doesn't work as a 100% cut
Just limits performance, you just lose the top 30% of the engine rev range so your top speed drops to maybe 55.
Engine just sucks it through Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg)

The trouble with the fuse is that if/when you forget about the cut off switch, and turn the key, the fuse will blow. Then you've got to muck about replacing it

We supply a 100amp FIA battery cut out switch (nothing special there) but housed in our own design of box that enables the cut out to be recessed into the seatbox thus avoiding passengers from inadvertantly treading on it.

If you cut the carpet / seat box matting to act as a flap its pretty well hidden too.

If you already have the cutout switch we sell the housing on it's own

Also....

If you don't have a battery backed up alarm...

Blowing a fuse would kill the alarm

Found this while fault find a relay in fuse panel, there is a yellow relay in td5 far left in centre interior fuse box and 300tdi's which if removed immobilises the starter and fuel pump, if a single pole switch was spliced into the relay coil side then you would have a immobiliser circuit which still gives you 12v supply to clocks and radio. Normally in dodgy areas I remove relay as it would deter a thief but will only slow down someone in the know

Cheers Greg,
Going for the multi layered approach might be the way - stick a switch in the relay coil feed for day to day use and then use a cut out switch with bypass for longer periods. Seeing the FCX switch is what got me thinking about this in the first place as I like the idea of hiding it under the carpet.

Thanks for all your responses.
