Afternoon All
I've got a TD5 90 SW but I want to take the spare off the back door and put it upright on the O/S wheel box, has this been done before and what would you recommend to retain it there? My first thought was a HCPU spare retainer but I'm not sure that will work. All help or suggestions much appreciated. Thanks for your help Life is one big adventure, that's why we have the vehicle for the journey. |

Since a TD5 has the old-style (flat-top) seatboxes in the back, you could probably use (if you can find one) the spare wheel mount from a Series II, IIA, or III LWB vehicle. They had a recess in the seatbox top (the recessed panel was a seperate part rivetted into a rectangular hole), together with a bracket which fitted to the seat box upper surface and body capping to clamp the wheel. There are plenty about in breakers, but you'd probably need to do some refurbishment before fitting.
It would at least be all genuine and look the part. Edit: See here to see what I'm on about! Click image to enlarge |

Assuming you can find one, the only problem may be that nothing wider than a 7.50 will fit in the recess. Darren

Good point, that! Some adaptation would be required.

Cheers Guys
I knew somebody would know what to do Ginjez I thought it looked familiar, is that the wheel holder from the back of your 110DC and just a piece of right angled plating? Life is one big adventure, that's why we have the vehicle for the journey. |

I have one of those wheel well recesses I no longer need. Freshly galvanised. Have a load of old tyres of various sizes here so can check if your size would fit. If it works for you make me an offer.

Thanks for the offer Mountain_man but I think that Ginjez has hit the nail on the head with his idea. Thanks for the offer though Life is one big adventure, that's why we have the vehicle for the journey.

The recess won't work in a 90 anyway as the bottom of it would want to be where your back wheel is! In SWb models the spare was always up against the bulkhead. What few people know is that some 109"s also had a similar layout. These are extremely rare but they used a much wider, shallower tray in the same was a series 1s used to have, so the spare could fit like in a SWB. They were designed for 9.00x16 tyres. A mate of mine happens to have one from a 1-Ton Series III project vehicle so if anyone really wanted I could get photos/measurements... 2011 110 USW

I will see what I have in my stash but I don't have many pics, and not sure if the ones I have are any good. I have only seen it on series III 1-Tons but may have appeared on other models...? 2011 110 USW

I gave away one of those wheel recess pieces the other month! (not the 109" 9.00x16 version though)
I run with 255's on the 90, so the 7.50 version wouldn't have fitted, but I was tentatively on the lookout for a second piece, so I could cut & weld them together, to make a mega-wide one (or just cut and weld in a strip) but I never got that far in the end. Ratchet strap to the rollcage inner hoop did the trick |
