D.I.Y.clutch change
No lift or ramp so I was thinking the following for an insitu clutch change.
1 Doors off
2 Steering wheel off
3 Seats out
4 Floor out
5 Trestle ladder through cabin and fixed in place
6 Hand winches and rope attached to trestle ladder
7 Start in on the clutch job.
Anyone done anything like this before? I have someone to give me a hand - not the Mrs this time.
Or is it a just payup and let the professionals do it? Whistle
P.S. Still wondering how far I can let the rattle go on for Laughing 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

The only time i had to do clutch work on a Defender (well 90 td actually) was when the clutch fork punched through and needed changing, i decided to take the engine off the gearbox and move it forwards on the engine lift and make enough room to get in the bellhousing to replace it.
This to me seemed like less work and safer to do when working alone.

Dont know how this job looks to do on a Puma but basicly i took of the bonnet removed front bumper front grille panel and radiator to make enough room to bring the engine forwards.The bellhousing bolts were accessible without removing the floor or tunnel and did not need to disconnect engine wiring or fuel pipes.

Managed the whole job single handed except needing a extra pair of hands when getting the engine back on the gearbox.

Your proposal is how it always used to be done in the days before the gearbox cross-member was bolted in, you had no choice! Not heard of it being done this way on a Puma though, and it would be interesting to hear how you get on.

You might at least want to get a quote for the job, though. With a 4-post lift and gearbox jack it is not a long job and may be less expensive than you think.

I hav'nt decided 100% about whether to go this road or not. I was just working out how it could be tackled and whether my plan of attack was feasible or not. There'll be no D.I.Y job this side of Christmas/ New year owing to work commitments and availability of help.
Getting a quote is a good and sensible idea. I have been trying to get the part no's of the parts used in the warranty replacement from the dealer who did the job.30.000 miles on a warranty replaced clutch does not seem acceptable to me.I'd like to use something more robust than the parts supplied to the dealer by Land Rover. If I get the part no's of those used I can check with the people here as to whether the up to date revised parts were used.
I have tried the Land Rover Customer Service contact on this site but all he could give me was the maindealer's phone number and the Land Rover line that owing to the nature of the part in question,i.e. the clutch they could'nt say what an acceptable service life would be. To me 30.000 miles is'nt acceptable.
Before I even considered getting a quote from the dealer I'd like to know whether the parts they would use this time are the same as the last ones. Hopefully a more robust longer lasting unit would be available now.

More room to get the trestle ladder through. I suppose if the clevis pins were removed from the door stays the doors could be folded against the wings. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

If i was going to drop the box in a DIY situation i would remove the passenger door and the transmission tunnel and cubby box and plate underneath and sling the gearbox from an engine hoist through the passenger door and lower it that way, it,s just too bulky and heavy to take out from underneath without a transmission jack.

To be honest i,d just bite the bullet and pay someone to do it for me. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Fit a sunroof - then sling the box on a long strop through the hole to lower it.

What milage had the clutch done and how bad was it?
How long did you live with the rattle before changing?
What replacement parts you use?
A site sponsor has a Borg and Beck clutch kit kisted. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Did my clutch , flywheel and gearbox on the drive,

I used an engine crane to lower and then lift the gearbox back in

Clutch replacement
Hi all I pulled out fender gearbox last weekend not a bad job we did it a home had a vehicle hoist which is a must for this task also a transmission jack on wheels makes life much simpler
If you download a manual cost $15 from the net you will find the method much simpler
We had box out in 2 hours Clucth change 1 hr new box in and running 4hrs all done in a day runs better than new
If gearbox is out you should replace rear output shaft to transfer case and concentric slave cylinder on side of gearbox
If your good with your hands I feel it's better to do it your self at least it's piece of mind to know what's doing under the seat as my fender has a mind of its own
