It might not be the safest car in the world, but I have no problem using the 130 as my work and family car. In the end you can't be scared of everything. I'm just doing my best to enjoy life.
Who knows I find time for a license to be able to ride a motorbike! |

i'm not disputing that being high up in 2 tonnes of iron isn't the best place to be sometimes.
but in my case i'm glad i wasn't. For my own self preservation, tree lined road, wet tarmac and a big swerve to try and a avoid a car halfway across the road the euro box as you like to describe them, did me proud. its a write off but i got off with some whiplash. the other vehicle benefited by me be able to steer away from a Tee bone situation due to vws superior EBD function. i took the front clean off there car but managed to avoid the passenger area. My kids are my world, not worth risking for automotive vanity. |

One of the problems with these tests on Utube is what are the testers trying to show?
Look at that D2 v Espace test done by Fifth Gear. An overlap of about 40% and then a straight impact. Why did they choose that configuration? Is that the most likely type of impact to occur on the UK roads? I have no idea. Or was the test designed to take a vehicle with a front beam (the Espace) which would distribute forces more evenly against the D2 where the test was designed to put forces down one side of the chassis? Deliberate bias on the part of the testers to show 4x4's in a bad light? Designing tests to be completely impartial is very difficult and you would have to do more crashes to come up with their conclusions. Want to see the effect of a high speed impact between a D3 and an Audi A4, then have a look HERE Not a staged event but a real life collision. Now decide where you would like your kids. Brendan |

Somehow that seems to insinuate people like me would be careless or that we don't love our children as much as you do. But in that case, you might consider selling your 110 as well. It's not worth risking for them to end up life without their beloved father. |

Not disputing a D3/4s safety credentials, but we are talking about the Defenders (or lack of them). Actually I would almost be grateful of a head on collision given the lack of side protection too Last edited by borderterrier on 8th Dec 2013 4:20pm. Edited 1 time in total |

And so will I mate, thats not my point. My point is that a light body, mounted on heavy chassis is not the best recipe for a safe vehicle, that and the lack of inherent modern day safety features. Of course I will still drive my Defender, thats why I bought it, but if I had to have a crash in my Defender or the wife's Skoda Yeti, the Skoda would be my choice. |

Don't you think we are all getting a bit too obsessed with safety and mollie coddling? My other car is a 40 year old Beetle which also has no airbags etc. and until about 15 years ago no cars had these features.
We can't go through life worrying about every single eventuality. Some accident in modern cars still end up in death. I drive my cars like I used to drive my motorbike - I assume all other drivers haven't seen me, giving me the best chance to take avoidance measures if I need to, but at the end of the day, you can't deal with fate. If its your time, it's your time, whether in a car, train, plane or just some horrible illness. |

Not at all obsessed mate as I said, I will never stop driving my Defender. I was just supporting the original poster's sentiment with regard to the Defender and its lack of safety features. I have a motorbike and a scooter too, so definately not risk averse!

i will be selling the 110...serves little purpose to me if it cant fulfill its role as a family car, you do what you want with your family. hitting a relatively small euro box at 50 mph hurts. pre tensioner seat belts, airbags, fuel cut offs, EBD etc all help cushion the blow. the 110 would of either rolled into the trees on the RHS of the road or ploughed straight through the other car. glad either didn't happen. |
