There are four brackets that secure to the roof rail. One at each corner of the shelf. The shelf frame then bolts to these brackets. If you want to remove it, it is a little like a meccano kit in that you dissmantle it in sections, but leave the brackets in place for easy refitment.

It is very similar in principle to Landrovers own Storage & Dog guards.

Having built something similar for mine, I can say that it's above the sightline from the rear view mirror. You'd definitely have to be short to sit beneath it though Laughing

I should add that it looks very smart, too.

Darren,

Do you have any pictures of how you built yours..?

Cheers

Hi Simon,

Strangely for me, no. Probably because I lashed it together in a hurry just before going on holiday last year Rolling Eyes I'll try and get some in the daylight today and post them up. Darren

Hello,

These pick up on existing fixings points located behind the trim and sit on the main body of the car using the roof bolts. The trim then gets put back. (no need for drilling)

I have attached a picture which hopefully shows where abouts these fixings points are.

Sorry Simon, took the pictures but completely forgot to post them Rolling Eyes

The shelf itself is a sheet of 9mm ply with a small batten on the leading edge to provide a bit of rigidity and to stop things just sliding off. It works well for coats and other 'soft' stuff.

The rear corners are then supported on two 9mm ply 'legs' that bolt to existing fixing points below the windows. Whilst they work perfectly well, they will eventually be replaced with something slightly more elegant. I plan to fit mesh window guards and then make some smaller metal brackets that can be attached to them at the right height.

The front edge also has a strengthening batten and is supported on the dog guard by way of being clamped to a second batten through the mesh.

As I said, this was very much a last minute lash-up but it's nicely rigid and does work very well. It was deliberately fitted without drilling any additional holes and the whole thing can be removed in a few minutes. When I get around to replacing the front supports, I'll paint it so that it blends in a bit more. Darren
