Something as simple as wind direction can have a big effect. In 6th, an overdrive gear, the fan would be running slower as the engine is turning over slower. Big difference in cooling effect between driving into the wind compared with driving with the wind.. Using 5th gear, which is a direct gear, gives a higher engine hence fan speed so wind direction has less of an effect.

Despite to be a very windy zone I dont remember that this day were too windy. Anyway it is safe to try the reply the fault again with the ODBII connected to see the parameters? or simply forget it and try to use the 5th gear when a slope appears? I think it will be "safe" to try and replicate the fault.
This system is in place so that (hopefuly) no matter how hard you try, you should not be able to overheat the engine. You will probably notice a drop in feul rail pressure as well as a drop in boost pressure. This will be in conjunction with a high CHT, Coolant temp and high Manifold intake temp. |

Each time I go to Kent coming back after Clacket Lane services on the M25 there is an incline of about 6 miles. Tackling it in 6th gear (which is really an overdrive/cruising gear) the engine temperatures do rise significantly. Changing down to 5th immediately always drops the temperatures significantly and the truck pulls much better. (I am monitoring on a Scangauge2 just for interest.) I personally don't think in your circumstances you have much to worry about and check the figures in comparison next time using 5th instead of 6th, or do a comparison as stated in both gears if you have the time and inclination. Me I wouldn't bother until I have to travel that route again. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |
