I have been following this thread with interest because I am experiencing most of the above symptoms as well.
The best way to describe my symptoms remind me of the older petrol distributor engines with manually adjusted points. If you get the dwell angle wrong it could induce mild 'pinking'. That is how I would describe mine, it's almost as though the timing is slightly off. But sometimes it sounds absolutely fine, especially under load or cruising once warmed up. It is especially noticeable with a cold engine and I am sure it is now taking longer to warm up. Might have a look at the MAP sensor. Question - is it safe to clean the MAP sensor with brake cleaner or spray with something like WD40 and wipe clean? I do use Castrol FC 2SO mainly for pump lubrication etc. My brother in laws Ford engine Jag had the pump disintegrate which blew the injectors and essentially killed the engine, it have covered about 85K. So - I try to minimise the risk. BAS has tweaked the ECU and it drives extremely well, but I don't know if the above is related? BM52 |

If only it was as simple as loosening the distributor and turning it a bit! These new fangled engines are great but it's not for us oldies to even attempt to tune them when things go wrong.
My BAS remap is good but it increases the noise horribly, even the Cook noticed it so it must be bad. Seems to my un- technical mind that if you increase power by tampering with some settings the rest of the engine settings must be changed as well. The remap doesn't and can't do this and I'm a bit annoyed that this isn't pointed out to intending purchasers although a couple of other owners I've spoken to haven't got the same problem. Maybe they're deafer than I am and just don't hear the noise. AlanH. |

When making any changes to the calibration - pump and pilot injection should be re-learnt as a matter of course, this is not possible to do via any of the current interfaces. So you need to visit an independent with IDS or similar diagnostic tool after you have flashed the new calibration.
I know that some specialists will disagree, but this is my opinion - The injection set-up on a Puma is absolutely critical on a Puma! One of the main problems (which is made worse at higher ambient temperatures, higher intake air temps - and with hotter fuel) is that 'some' tuners start playing with pulse width and injection timing under the mis-allusion of getting more power (based on old diesel technology). The way the fuelling strategy works on Puma (toque based) - this is the wrong way to do it... and will cause increased injector noise among a few other problems. Land Rover spend millions developing the optimum injector timing and pulse width - so this should be left alone. Let's hear how you get on at James French. If they get your Defender sorted out, I might send the Mrs. over to them. There's a few things about her that have been annoying me for years. Well I'm back from me hols and I did go to James French.
Steve (who is, has already been well reported, a complete gentleman ) went for a drive, did a pilot relearn, went for another drive, plugged her in again and said that if he owned my 110 he would be more than happy with it ! The slight rattle, he said, was just a little diesel knock and if he was to adjust anything to quieten it down the performance would be reduced - he said this has often been the case with TD5s so he suggested I leave well alone. He also would take no money off me so I put a hefty donation into their Air Ambulance fund pot instead. My kids were more than happy to sit on their comfy leather sofas glued to their ipads while all this was taking place by the way I think I'll just ignore the rattle from now on - especially after towing a 1.5 tonne caravan plus kids, gear etc through 30 degree heat with the aircon on full blast returned 23.4 mpg. I'm beginning to think these Puma engines need to work hard in order to perform properly. Unfortunately for most of the year its just school run stuff which is not good ! |

AlanH,
following my experience of replacing the fuel filter I can't recommend this enough is tried. the difference is like day / night. I'm relieved and amazed at how well the car now drives I'm very much thinking of getting the / fuel lines cleaned out as I'm sure at some point there's been a load of contaminated fuel gone in. when I drain the filter off its some much better than it was albeit its still not 100% clean but soo much better. I'm convinced there must have been fuel starvation (which the 'pinking' / lack of power would be expected) however no MIL does suprise me. Last edited by Caterham on 2nd Feb 2014 12:23pm. "following my experience of replacing the fuel filter I can't recommend this is tried." Got me a bit confused their Caterham, are you recommending it be tried or not?
Actually the warranty is now over so I reinstalled the Remap and took it nice and easy and didn't allow the engine to labour at all. Then over the weekend we did a short trip south and did some 1000klms towing the van over about 900 of them. It pulls really well and the knock is considerably less than it was. And if I close the window and don't wear my hearing aids it's even better. AlanH. |

its was meant to read ' I can't recommend it enough'. (just remember as mentioned in many places ensure you fill new filter with fuel first). Blackwolf has had a similar thing recently only his improvements were unfortunately very short lived. do you every drain the a little out of the fuel filter drain and if so do it come out quite clean? this leads me to wonder if there might be a large capacity filter that fits and has same filter quality ie 5 micros / 8 microns or whatever but allows a greater number of litres to pass through? |

I'll be doing a complete oil change soon at 100k so will try a new fuel filter as well. Thanks for the tip and I'll let you know how it goes.

Alan,
just a thought. If I had my time again and unless someone can recommend otherwise I'd probably have given mine a does of the biocide killer stuff that intended as a fuel additive / fuel tank / lines cleaner. might be worth giving a going a tankful before changing the filter? I look forward to hearing how you get on. |

Re the '2so' part of this debate (I haven't read all the posts / replies etc) has anyone used Archoil AR6400-D and subsequently AR6200 in their Defender?
http://www.powerenhancer.co.uk/section.php...30a10cdd0e Some intersesting claims and testimonials. You add the AR6400-D initially then the AR6200 on an ongoing basis when you fill up. I know you can't believe everything you read on the web but it's interesting reading. |

Just wondering how you are getting on? I've replaced the VCV, map and MAF sensors over a period of time and things appear to be great but I've only done one quick drive sense changing the MAF so too early to say for sure. Won't be for a couple of weeks till I get to do some big miles but will keep you informed. If I had my time again might have started with the MAF but not sure. |

damn gone !
I feel I've gone full circle here. I'm sure in the early days I suspected the egr....... well having spent £100's on sensors etc I'm back to square one (well not quite the engine is running really sweet most of the time - better than it ever has), I reckon the egr is next on the swap list (or at least I must get round to fitting the egr blank which will cure the egr from leaking......if thats what it is? |

Morning Caterham,
You do brighten up a wet and miserable morning. Not because of any misfortune but your relentless pursuit in making your Defender purrr like a pussycat. Good luck in your quest and thank you. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |
