I'll keep it simple - the new Defender should be built to last and of modular construction - when bits do wear out or technology moves on, they should be easily replaceable/updated. The vehicle might be expensive initially but if you know it will last for say 20 years then residual values will stay high and cost per mile will be reasonable.

It might even qualify for a green/sustainability award if it can be updated to give a long and reliable lifespan in today's disposable/throwaway culture.

As for design - it needs to look like a Land Rover workhorse - not an anonymous aerodynamic blob from the Far East.

IMHO the deep bumper is what is ruining the front end design so far, it make the front look squashed upwards. The Disco 3 front end is hideously ugly I think, I wouldn't want a Defender to look like that. The Disco 4 is a big improvement though...

The first design with a slimmer bumper would look good. 2011 110 USW

Current Defenders often have massive unsightly bumpers, winches, A bars & lights added.... Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

You can save your deliberations, the Defender replacement "will not look like the DC100" - Gerry McGovern in this weeks autocar mag.

"The DC100 was a good starting point, but we've moved the design on" " it's much better now"

With confirmation that it will be launched in 2017.

Cheers

Steve

So there will be a gap between the current Defender & its "Gerry-fender" replacement. i hope its as rugged as an ifor trailer and not all girly and pretty like a range rover - its got to be simplistic to be desirable, otherwise it may have to compete against everything else 2005 TD5 90 Hard Top

^^ I agree, however the Dc100 does not come anywhere close to what you (and I) are thinking, and I can't see McGovern being able to avoid his ultra-modern super-complex design style. The Current crop of LR products look very sci-fi to me. 2011 110 USW

It's got to be simplistic to appeal to it's current user base, and even with them there's internal competition with various Discos etc.

For those that really need a simplistic then it'll be a hard sell to get them to give up their existing landy I'd have thought, as they could probably keep them going indefinitely (am assuming that's the armed forces and users in less developed spots)? 2009 110 XS Station Wagon

If i were the boss of LAND ROVER, i would just put 2 airbags,a roll cage and a down-sized
engine EURO6 in the current DEFENDER.Nothing else !
