United Kingdom 2014 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Firenze Red
Subaru Outback
Gents,

I need a second car and looking at about 10-15k to spend. Just bought a house in the sticks and will be weekly commuting to work. Looking like a 3 ish hour journey.

I want a 4wd estate, decent mpg and sensible road tax etc and am looking at the subaru outback pretty seriously. Does anyone have any experience of them or know what changed mechanically between the 2009 and 2010 models.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks

Ian Thumbs Up

Get one, you won't regret it.
I have a Forester XT. Used that one as a daily and still take it from time to time when I'm in a hurry.
It's by far the most reliable car I've ever had.

2 Litre Diesel Forester would perhaps be my preferred weapon of choice against the Outback glancing at the reviews. Thumbs Up

I've had a few Subarus over the years and really rated them. The last was a Legacy estate and was our main car for a number of years. The only reason I got rid of it was because the ex-wife gibbed at a fortnight touring Scotland with a caravan as she thought the milage was high. I was really miffed as it was only 80miles shy of 200k but I did part-ex it for a very tidy V8 Discovery. Now that was fun trying to find lpg stations in the Highlands of Scotland!
All that went wrong with any of our Subarus was a crank sensor on the last one and the special edition alloys began to crack, mainly from being reattached with air guns at the likes of Bodge fit etc. Fair play to Subaru, they stumped up a fair amount of the replacement cost of two new wheel centres. It was impossible to source the original fitment so we had a very close copy, not bad for a motor that was 5 years old at the time Thumbs Up

A similar vehicle would be the Volvo XC70.

I've owned mine for 5 years and 75k miles. Great car. Loads of space, 4WD, and that lovely D5 engine Thumbs Up

The XC's a much nicer cabin (feeling of quality) and some available at good prices 2nd hand.

My brother-in-law had the Outback, it drank fuel, and components were expensive (disks & pads were expensive), and it's not a patch on the Volvo for long-distance driving comfort. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

I had the Subaru Forester Turbo
Great car in a straight line but I was also running a Subaru Rb320
And you'd forget the forester doesn't corner well Laughing
Great car for carrying loads of kit though and really quick.

Steve, compared to my 130 it corners like a racing car and the sound of the engine is lovely!
I used mine to tow trailers full of sand where my Transporter simply couldn't cope with it because of its fwd. Far too much weight for the Subaru actually but it never broke down.
They are fantastic little fridges on wheels on the backroads with loose gravel and the snow covered tracks in winter time.
Did I already say I love my little Forester?
Mr. Green

Apart from standard maintenance I do myself as it's an old car without warranty, I never had any extra costs. They like to drink if you tow heavy trailers or if like to put your foot down. That's for sure!

Yeah
The forester is a great car.
I've loved the whole Subaru range with seven new cars back to back
I became such good friends with the dealers that ww are still drinking
Buddies and they just bought two defenders after seeing mine for there
Wedding company.
I also had an Isuzu Denver Max pick up from them as they were by the
Subaru dealers here

I had a petrol Forester Ian. It was hugely capable, but thirsty. Parts ain't cheap when they go wrong either.

Thanks for the comments.

I looked at the Volvo but they're 30mpg and £240 road tax, so still looking at the Outback, but the new shape and definitely a diesel.

The skoda looks ok, but my experience with my current VW California has been distinctly average......actually the most unreliable car I have owned so am kind of put off the VW group.
