2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 USW Aintree Green
Wobbly ZU/BFG AT combo
I thought that I had solved this problem but following some recent and rare motorway action the wobble was back.

This is a 2009 110 UTE with ZU alloys and BFG 265/75R16 AT fitted. I've had them balanced a couple of times, switched wheels around, etc etc. The video linked here shows where I suspect is the problem -its impossible to locate the wheels on the hubs in the same place twice.

Does anyone have any input on this?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUpjez6Ca4k...share

I would say that the issue is you are never going to centre the wheel without some kind of spacer / shim. This is common with aftermarket wheels that don't have a spacer / shim to centre them. If you are lucky and get it centred a bump / pothole can then move it off centre thus it will then be out of balance.

Had this a few times on rally cars Wink

Looks like the Zu wheel hub tolerances are a bit off. I think the oem boosts used a closer fit to the Hub centering the wheel as the oem tube nuts don't have a taper to help so their role is clamping not centering. It looks like Zu should have used taper style nuts if their hub tolerances didn't match oem, not that it helps you :/
It needs some sort of hubcentring ring to take up the tolerance, maybe a shim of stainless steel/similar might help take up the gap. I'd avoid a soft metal as it may get hammered out of shape if there was still some slack. 2023 110 P400e

Do you use the conical wheel nuts?

Seems like he´s using the standard LR nuts for alloy wheel - take a look at the video.

Thinking of buying Zu´s for my 90, but this concerns me. 2009 Land Rover Defender 90 SVX Soft top 60th Anniversary Edition

that certainly is not a tight fit id send this information to the manufacturer perhaps find an outlet to approve your findings, it could be simply wrong nuts but im sure that advice would be splashed across the page when purchasing them. a shim, or collar to fit behind a spigot of sorts may be required
I have the same combination, Zu + BFG265/75R16, for 4 years now, never had a problem with them. Cheers, Vincent

Your wheel doesn't look like it's sitting flat against the hub, if the hole (center bore)on your wheel is to small,it's dangerous to drive.
If the wheel does sit perfectly flat against the hub you need a spacer in the center bore, either way its dangerous to drive as is. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

We have Zu Rims fitted to two of our Defenders with BFG AT 265/75 and BFG MT 255/85.

Have NOT experienced any problems with them.

Before blaming the wheels what about the nuts or studs? What were the nuts torqued up to?

Have any weights been shed so the wheel/tyre combination is out of Balance?

+ 1 to what Brendan says.

I have exactly the same issue with std boosts and 235/85R16 tires (GG, BFG AT, COOPER STT)

Bolts are orig LR items that came with the car.

I took of my spacers, suspecting them, no difference so guess studs can be ruled out.

Only when putting the wheels on by hand and taking care about centering before tightening up i am vibration free.

If i just tighten them up, or the tire service... vibration.

I found I had bit of play between wheel and hub too but not as bad as in video .
I had some wheel nuts made (only 3) look bit like std nut but instead of flat washer that tightens on to wheel they have taper so they line up wheel on the wheel nut hole outer edge .. I put the three in just nip them up to hold wheel central then put std two in and tighten up then remove tapered and fit other three std nuts

Yes, as mentioned in previous post I used the wheel nut that came with the vehicle from the factory. It's an XS and came with Boosts

Great plan. I'll try that.
